Fagan, Mary K.; Pisoni, David B.; Horn, David L.; Dillon, Caitlin M. – Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, 2007
The performance of deaf children with cochlear implants was assessed using measures standardized on hearing children. To investigate nonverbal cognitive and sensorimotor processes associated with postimplant variability, five selected sensorimotor and visuospatial subtests from "A Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment" (NEPSY) were compared…

Fedorenko, Evelina; Gibson, Edward; Rohde, Douglas – Journal of Memory and Language, 2007
This paper reports the results of four dual-task experiments that were designed to determine the extent of domain-specificity of the verbal working memory resources used in linguistic integrations. To address this question, syntactic complexity was crossed in a 2x2 design with the complexity of a secondary task, which involved either (1)…

Tardif, Twila; So, Catherine Wing-Chee; Kaciroti, Niko – Developmental Psychology, 2007
Two studies were conducted with Cantonese-speaking preschoolers examining J. de Villiers's (1995) hypothesis that syntactic complements play a unique role in the acquisition of false belief (FB). In Study 1, the authors found a positive correlation between FB and syntactic complements in 72 four- to six-year-old Cantonese-speaking preschoolers.…

H. Lee Swanson; Rollanda O'Connor – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2009
The authors investigated whether practice in reading fluency had a causal influence on the relationship between working memory (WM) and text comprehension for 155 students in Grades 2 and 4 who were poor or average readers. Dysfluent readers were randomly assigned to repeated reading or continuous reading practice conditions and compared with…

Jenks, Kathleen M.; de Moor, Jan; van Lieshout, Ernest C. D. M. – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2009
Background: Although it is believed that children with cerebral palsy are at high risk for learning difficulties and arithmetic difficulties in particular, few studies have investigated this issue. Methods: Arithmetic ability was longitudinally assessed in children with cerebral palsy in special (n = 41) and mainstream education (n = 16) and…

Verhoeven, Ludo; van Hell, Janet G. – Discourse Processes: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2008
This study examined the representation of knowledge in text writing in 20 ten-year-old children and 20 adults in the Netherlands. The research analyzed the use of clause linking devices to compose larger text units. Special attention was given to the use of causal relational markers and the extent to which causal relations within the texts matched…

Peeters, Marieke; Verhoeven, L.; van Balkom, H.; de Moor, J. – Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 2008
Background: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) and accompanying disabilities are prone to reading difficulties. The aim of the present study was to examine the foundations of phonological awareness in pre-school children with CP in comparison with a normally developing control group. Rhyme perception was regarded as an early indicator of…

Brightwell, Jennifer J.; Smith, Clayton A.; Neve, Rachael L.; Colombo, Paul J. – Learning & Memory, 2007
Extensive research has shown that the hippocampus is necessary for consolidation of long-term spatial memory in rodents. We reported previously that rats using a place strategy to solve a cross maze task showed sustained phosphorylation of hippocampus cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB), a transcription factor implicated in…

Whiteley, John H.; And Others – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1987
Processes contributing to matching-to-sample deficits were investigated with 22 moderately and severely mentally retarded adolescents. Although nonretarded subjects performed better on immediate and delayed retention tests, there was no difference in rate of forgetting, and rehearsal improved delayed test performance equally for both groups.…

Baillargeon, Renee; Graber, Marcia – Developmental Psychology, 1988
Examined eight-month-olds' ability to remember the location of a hidden object, using a nonsearch task. Results suggested that the infants remembered the object's location, and were surprised when it had been moved. (SKC)

Foster, Kelli; Torgesen, Joseph K. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1983
Directed study, in which all children were required to engage in the same number of repetitive spellings of word lists, had significant effects on spelling performance of learning disabled children without short-term memory deficits, but not Ss with short-term memory problems. Findings suggest that some LD children may need different kinds of…

Ellis, Norman R.; Wooldridge, Peter W. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1985
Twelve mentally retarded and 12 nonretarded adults were compared in a Brown-Peterson short-term memory task for the retention of words and pictures over intervals up to 30 seconds. The retarded subjects forgot more rapidly over the initial 10 seconds. They also retained pictures better than they did words. (Author/DB)

Howard, Lawrence; Polich, John – Developmental Psychology, 1985
Digit span and latency from P300 component of event-related brain potential--a measure of stimulus evaluation time--were obtained from children and adults. Increases in digit span were associated with decreases in peak latency for children but not adults, suggesting that immediate memory development is tightly coupled with decreases in speed of…
