Charness, Neil – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1976
An information processing model, Memory-Aided Pattern Perceiver (MAPP), that simulates the recall of briefly presented chess positions, was subjected to a test of its assumption that such positions are encoded and stored as chunks in short-term memory. (Editor)
Descriptors: Charts, Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Information Processing
Peer reviewedTzeng, Ovid J. L. – American Journal of Psychology, 1976
Why does the rehearsal of information not interfere with a subject's temporal judgments. Offers evidence in favor of one possible interpretation. Taking an analogy from the phenomenon of the localization of sound in a sound-reverberating room, this research suggests a precedence effect in verbal information processing. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Charts, Experiments, Information Processing, Memory
Peer reviewedFriedman, Alinda – American Journal of Psychology, 1976
These experiments allow a comparison between visual and auditory presentation per se: Will it be easier to identify "red" as relevant given a geometric design or its verbal description? Suggests that visual presentation confers one advantage: allows the formation of a nonverbal code in addition to a verbal description. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Experiments, Information Processing, Problem Solving
Peer reviewedRichards, Larry G. – American Journal of Psychology, 1976
Two experiments using five lists of words were conducted to explore the effects of the concreteness or abstractness of words on their tachistoscopic recognition. (Editor)
Descriptors: Charts, Experiments, Psychological Studies, Research Methodology
Peer reviewedMitchell, Gail; Phillips, Donald B. – Science and Children, 1977
Lists materials and procedures for experimenting with detergents. Included are methods for determination of the densities of dry detergents, ph values of detergent solutions, and a discussion of the ability of detergents to remove iodine stains from cloth. (CS)
Descriptors: Consumer Education, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedHerron, J. Dudley – Journal of Chemical Education, 1977
Presents short articles on: recycling disposable plastics for laboratory use; an inexpensive source of atomic and molecular models; a simplified Boyle's Law demonstration; and a lab demonstrating energy transformation. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Demonstrations (Educational), Instruction, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedLambert, Jack L.; Meloan, Clifton E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1977
Describes a scheme that uses precipitation, gas evolution, complex ion formation, and flame tests to analyze for the following ions: Hg(I), Hg(II), Sb(III), Cr(III), Pb(II), Sr(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), As(III), chloride, nitrate, and sulfate. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education
Peer reviewedEaton, Bruce G., Ed. – American Journal of Physics, 1977
Presents four short articles on: a power supply for the measurement of the charge-to-mass ratio of the electron; a modified centripetal force apparatus; a black box electronic unknown for the scientific instruments laboratory; and a simple scaling model for biological systems. (MLH)
Descriptors: College Science, Electronic Equipment, Higher Education, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedJuestis, Laurence – Journal of Chemical Education, 1977
Describes an experiment involving the oxidation of aromatic primary amines to the corresponding azo compound; suggests procedures for studying factors that influence the yield of such a reaction, including the choice of solvent and the oxidant-amine ratio. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education
Peer reviewedBirk, James P.; Ronan, Thomas H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1977
Discusses the feasibility of analytical experiments that use only spot plates and eye droppers, thus allowing quantitative experiments to be performed with quantitites limited to several milliliters per student. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedDudek, Emily – Journal of Chemical Education, 1977
Describes an experiment that involves the synthesis of copper (II) aspirinate and the analysis of copper content in the product using electrogravimetric, spectrophotometric, and titrimetric methods. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedLefkowitz, Louis J. – Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, 1977
Presented are accounts of how two local jurisdictions in the United States have dealt with the question of regulating recombinant DNA research. Arguments used to devise guidelines for consideration by the New York State Legislature and the recommendations made by a citizens group in Cambridge, Massachusetts are detailed. (CS)
Descriptors: Biology, Genetics, Government Role, Legislation
Peer reviewedBulletin of the Atomic Scientists, 1977
Reproduced is the report made by a citizens' group in Cambridge, Massachusetts and presented to the city council that outlines safety regulations for the conduct of recombinant DNA research at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. (CS)
Descriptors: Biology, Community Involvement, Genetics, Government Role
Wetzel, C. Douglas; Hunt, Richard E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
The role of differential rehearsal opportunity in the free recall of remember- (R) and forget- (F) cued words was investigated as a function of the method of presentation. (Editor)
Descriptors: Cues, Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Flow Charts
Laughlin, Patrick R.; Sweeney, James D. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
Assesses both individual-to-group and group-to-individual transfer on a concept-attainment task in a between-subjects design with both of the appropriate individual-to-individual and group-to-group controls. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Group Dynamics, Problem Solving
