Shriberg, Lawrence D.; Kwiatkowski, Joan – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1982
Data are presented to support the reliability, validity, and utility of a procedure to assess the severity of a phonological disorder. The severity metric, the percentage of consonants correct (PCC), is readily derived from a continuous speech sample. PCC values index four levels of severity of involvement: mild, mild-moderate, moderate-severe,…

Turner, Carol J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
Four hundred twenty-five liberal arts students completed one form of the Self-Assessment Questionnaires developed to help college students identify occupations consistent with their major field of study. The analyses indicate that the reliability and validity of the inventory appears adequate for counseling purposes. (Author/PN)

Laine, Colin J.; Wong, Bernice Y. L. – B. C. Journal of Special Education, 1982
Results from the testing of 23 eighth grades with the Structure of Intellect (S.O.I.) Learning Abilities Test to discriminate among abilities and needs of different groups of children indicated the test could be used to identify children with potential learning problems, diagnose needs, and aid educators to select appropriate programs. Stewart, Michael J.; Blair, William O. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Raters' agreement and the relative consistency of diving judges at a boy's competition were analyzed using intraclass correlations within 16 position x type combinations. Judges' variance was significant for 5 of the 16 combinations. Point estimates were generally greater for consistency than for raters' agreement about scores. (Author/CM)

McConnell, Campbell – Journal of Economic Education, 1983
The Flesch reading formula is questioned as being appropriate for evaluating college economics textbooks. The Dale-Chall, Modified Dale-Chall, Fry, and Flesch formulas were used to evaluate nine introductory textbooks. There was little or no consistency in either the absolute reading levels or the rank orderings. (Author/AM)

Day, H.D.; And Others – Journal of Research in Personality, 1983
Examined the utility of the aggregation method as a measure of behavioral consistency in 26 studies involving computer-generated, repeated-measurement data. Concluded that aggregation produces spuriously high estimates of behavioral consistency. The Spearman-Brown prophecy formula and coefficient alpha accurately predict the results of the…

Karweit, Nancy; Slavin, Robert E. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1982
In time-on-task observations, the effects of variations in methodological characteristics on the importance of time-on-task for student achievement were examined. Substantive conclusions were affected by variations in five areas with the greatest differences due to changes in the duration and number of days of observation. (CM)

Schell, Leo M. – Reading World, 1982
Argues that the results of oral reading tests may be interpreted as being more precise and reliable than is warranted and that the amount of error in the results of these tests may make them more variable than is typically assumed. Recommends ways to improve the interpretation of oral reading test scores. (FL)

Duffelmeyer, Frederick A. – Reading World, 1982
Evaluates the practicability of the Singer Eyeball Estimate of Readability (SEER) techniques with 32 college students. Reveals that only two of the students met SEER's criterion for being considered acceptable judges. Concludes that the criterion is overly stringent and proposes a revised criterion designed to make the SEER technique more…

Godbout, Paul; Schutz, Robert W. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1983
The appropriateness of several generalizability coefficients based on observational ratings of a number of subjects, each rated by the same observers over a number of motor performance trials, was examined. The extent to which observational designs can impair the computation of some coefficients and/or alter their value was also investigated.…

Winne, Philip H.; Belfry, M. Joan – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1982
This review of issues about correcting for attenuation concludes that the basic difficulty lies in being able to identify and equate sources of variance in estimates of validity and reliability. Recommendations are proposed for cautious use of correction for attenuation. (Author/CM)

Mishra, Shitala P.; Lord, Jan – Journal of School Psychology, 1982
Examined the reliability and predictive validity of the WISC-R with Navajo children (N=40). Internal consistency reliability estimates of WISC-R subtests as well as composites were found to be low for the Navajo subjects. The predictive validity of the WISC-R IQ scales was similarly found to be very low. (Author)
