This article presents lesson plans that use downloadable spreadsheet tools that relate symbolic and graphical representations of functions. Instructions and a template allow readers to create personalized tools without programming. (Contains 14 figures.)

Knowing the mathematics relating to a problem is one thing, but producing a tool to solve a practical example is often daunting. This article describes a case study which presented an interesting implementational challenge.

The practicality and usefulness of variational Monte Carlo calculations to atomic structure are demonstrated.
