Discusses the testing experience as it affects the black community. Contends that nationally standardized tests have: (1) excluded the black population in establishing their norms; (2) become instruments for reinforcement of negative black images; and, (3) been used inadvertently or otherwise to bar blacks from higher education. College students requesting counseling were tested with the MMPI and the Need Scales of the Adjective Check List (ACL). Personality interpretations of the results for use in detecting personal problems in students who apply for vocational or educational (VE) counseling are presented and discussed. (Author)

Investigation of the use of SATB norms for MDTA training courses disclosed that approximately half the applicants admitted to training did not pass the appropriate norms. Results indicated that the SATB's had good selective efficiency for MDTA trainees; a new method of SATB interpretation was strongly supported by the data. (Author)

This article examines problems inherent in current practice: (1) defining the concept of intelligence"; (2) using tests which rely on school taught skills; (3) relying too exclusively on test scores; and (4) introducing the concept of chronological age into IQ ratings, further distorting results.
