Hilliard, Asa G., III – Negro Educational Review, 1987
The utility of intelligence tests for teaching and learning is questionable. These tests and the construct of intelligence have little value in classifying, predicting, and diagnosing the mental competence of Black children. Research may reveal components of mental potential which are more testable. Standardized I.Q. tests should be abandoned. (VM)

Petti, Michael – Academic Therapy, 1988
If clearly and fully reported, verbal subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised can provide teachers with insights into a student's learning characteristics. Specific weaknesses that may be identified by each subtest are linked to their educational implications, including alternative techniques the teacher might use for…

Vernon, Philip A.; And Others – Intelligence, 1985
Eighty-one university students were given a battery of reaction time tests and a group test of intelligence which yielded timed and untimed scores. Multiple regression analyses indicated that speed of information-processing was an equally good predictor of timed and untimed intelligence test performance. (Author/LMO)

Yewchuck, C. – B. C. Journal of Special Education, 1986
Six issues relating to assessment of gifted/learning disabled (GLD) students are discussed: (1) incidence; (2) cut-off IQ scores; (3) barriers to identification; (4) use of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised; (5) differentiation between GLD and underachieving gifted; (6) qualitative differences between GLD, gifted, and learning…

Bieber, Stephen L.; Meredith, William – Psychometrika, 1986
Meredith's method of extracting a factorially invariant solution is adapted to longitudinal settings. An explorational estimation procedure is presented which attempts to identify the longitudinal factor components of an across occasion variance-covariance matrix. Data from 166 subjects on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale is used to…

Lampley, David A.; Rust, James O. – Psychology in the Schools, 1986
Investigated the validity of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) with a sample of preschool-age children. The K-ABC did not differentiate between age or sex groups, but blacks scored lower than whites. The findings are supportive of previous validity students and two-factor theories of intelligence. Sternberg, Robert J. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1986
Though the most widely used "Intelligence" tests have changed little in the last half century, the author predicts a variety of new influences of future intelligence testing, ranging from the ways we conceptualize intelligence, to the manner in which we pose problems to assess it. (Author/JAZ)

Sattler, Jerome M; Covin, Thernon M. – Psychology in the Schools, 1986
The Slosson Intelligence Test (revised norms) (SIT) and the WISC-R (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised) were compared. Results provide a moderate degree of support for the concurrent validity of the revised SIT norms, using the WISC-R as the criterion. However, the intelligence quotients on the two tests may not be interchangeable.…

Carroll, John B. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1984
This article reviews Raymond B. Cattell's important contributions to intelligence testing and the theory of intelligence. His theory of fluid and crystallized intelligences and other high-order factors of cognitive ability has offered the most well-founded and reasonable approach to an acceptable theory. (Author/BS)

Dean, Raymond D. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1984
Contends that a recent examination of this author's research by Coolidge (1983) regarding distinguishing between learning-disabled and emotionally disturbed children ignored level and dispersion of subtests and belied the original multivariate logic of group discrimination. Discussed the comparative deficit in perceptual organization for…

Buckhalt, Joseph A. – Psychology in the Schools, 1985
Students referred for gifted programs or for evaluation of learning difficulties answered questions about their highest and lowest subtest scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised. Both groups viewed performance subtests as best, and correlations between particular subtests perceived as best or worst and actual scores were…

Clarizio, Harvey; Veres, Valerie – Psychology in the Schools, 1984
Investigated the best short form of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Revised) in a comparison of 234 learning disabled students and 290 referred but ineligible children. Results suggested that Sattler's (1982) tetrad is a good predictor of Full Scale Intelligence for learning disabled students. (JAC)

Wallen, Norman E. – Social Education, 1984
Theoretical, technical, and practical charges which have been made against the IQ test in recent years are examined. Teachers need to be aware of these issues, since IQ testing directly affects perceptions of, and planning for, their students. (RM)
