Under conditions commonly met in optimal scaling problems, arbitrary sets of optimal weights can be obtained by choices of generalized universe scores. It is suggested that the invariant parameters of optimal scaling should be interpreted according to latent trait theory, rather than the arbitrary weights. (Author/JKS)

Data are often a continuous function of a variable such as time observed over some interval. One or more such functions might be observed for each subject. The extension of classical data analytic techniques to such functions is discussed. (Author/JKS)

A short form of the MMPI, the Improved Readability Form (IRF), was shown to contain items that were more readable, more stable, and less ambiguous than excluded items. Results suggest that the IRF may function as well as available short forms with persons of normal and near normal intelligence. (Author)

Judgment analysis is a technique for examining the behavior of judges in rating subjects on a single attribute. This paper presents the multivariate analogue to that technique, which consists of rating subjects on several attributes. The logic of the extension and an example are presented. (JKS)

The relationship between mental speed and IQ was studied with 120 adults who completed a battery of elementary cognitive tests (ECTs). As expected, high speed of information processing on ECTs was related to high psychometric intelligence, but this relationship could not be localized at the level of general intelligence. (SLD)
