Peer reviewedDowning, Steven M. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1992
Research on true-false (TF), multiple-choice, and alternate-choice (AC) tests is reviewed, discussing strengths, weaknesses, and the usefulness in classroom and large-scale testing of each. Recommendations are made for improving use of AC items to overcome some of the problems associated with TF items. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Educational Research, Multiple Choice Tests, Objective Tests
Peer reviewedCunningham, James W.; Moore, David W. – Journal of Reading Behavior, 1993
Investigates whether the vocabulary of written comprehension questions is an independent factor in determining students' reading comprehension performance. Finds that academic vocabulary in comprehension questions significantly decreased question-answering performance. Computes simple, multiple, and semipartial correlations between vocabulary…
Descriptors: Academic Discourse, Correlation, Intermediate Grades, Reading Comprehension
Castillo, Emma S. – RELC Journal: A Journal of Language Teaching and Research in Southeast Asia, 1990
The SEAMEO Regional Language Centre (RELC) English Proficiency Test development project is described, including objectives and methodology. The first and second versions of the RELC test showed four kinds of validity (content/face, concurrent, construct, and predictive), but the second version was found to be more valid. (LB)
Descriptors: English (Second Language), English for Academic Purposes, Foreign Countries, Language Proficiency
Peer reviewedHenry, Rachael M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1991
Logical difficulties with existing measures of construct implications are examined, and a new instrument that partially overcomes them--the Logical Relations Grid--is described. Empirical data from a study of 28 children and 47 parents in Australia are given in support of instrument reliability and validity. (SLD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Construct Validity, Elementary School Students, Foreign Countries
Bostian, Charles W. – Engineering Education, 1991
A methodical approach to teaching that can be used with almost any class style and with any instructional media is described. Planning courses, designing a syllabus, teaching strategies, the use of office hours, test construction, and personal interaction with students are discussed. (KR)
Descriptors: College Science, Course Descriptions, Curriculum Development, Engineering Education
Peer reviewedNorcini, John J.; Shea, Judy A. – Academic Medicine, 1990
This study retrospectively applies aggregate scoring to the cardiology questions from a recertifying examination in general internal medicine. Three groups of experts were identified among the examinees and the remainder of the examinees were the participants (N=1887) of the study. Generalizability theory is applied to these data. (MLW)
Descriptors: Answer Keys, Cardiology, Certification, Higher Education
Peer reviewedNoe, Francis P.; Snow, Rob – Journal of Environmental Education, 1990
Examined were the responses of park visitors to the New Environmental Paradigm scale. Research methods, and results including reliabilities and factor analysis of the scales on the survey are discussed. (CW)
Descriptors: Community Attitudes, Conservation (Environment), Environmental Education, Postsecondary Education
Murname, Richard J. – Phi Delta Kappan, 1991
Rather than mandating more preservice coursework or raising standardized test score requirements, states should pursue performance-based teacher licensing by designing a test of literacy and writing skills, alternative training programs, and assessments of teaching performance for novice teachers seeking long-term certification. RAND and ETS…
Descriptors: Beginning Teachers, Elementary Secondary Education, Literacy, Performance Tests
Peer reviewedArmstrong, Ronald D.; And Others – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1994
A network-flow model is formulated for constructing parallel tests based on classical test theory while using test reliability as the criterion. Practitioners can specify a test-difficulty distribution for values of item difficulties as well as test-composition requirements. An empirical study illustrates the reliability of generated tests. (SLD)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Computer Assisted Testing, Difficulty Level, Item Banks
Peer reviewedZytowski, Donald G. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1994
Reviews Leo Goldman's (1972) assertion of failed relationship between tests and counseling. Reviews seven suggestions made by Goldman to remedy situation and considers how they have affected the relationship between tests and counseling. Concludes that relationship remains intact, chiefly in the field of career counseling. (NB)
Descriptors: Career Counseling, Competence, Counseling Techniques, Counselor Qualifications
Peer reviewedPrediger, Dale J. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1994
Responds to Goldman's (1972) article asserting failed relationship between tests and counseling. Describes basis for renewed relationship between tests and career counseling. Reviews reasons Goldman cited for failed testing-counseling relationship, then focuses on two of Goldman's major themes: problems with selection-oriented, prediction models…
Descriptors: Career Counseling, Competence, Counseling Techniques, Counselor Qualifications
Peer reviewedNandakumar, Ratna – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1993
The phenomenon of simultaneous differential item functioning (DIF) amplification and cancellation and the role of the SIBTEST approach in detecting DIF are investigated with a variety of simulated test data. The effectiveness of SIBTEST is supported, and the implications of DIF amplification and cancellation are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Elementary Secondary Education, Equal Education, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedStocking, Martha L.; Swanson, Len – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1993
A method is presented for incorporating a large number of constraints on adaptive item selection in the construction of computerized adaptive tests. The method, which emulates practices of expert test specialists, is illustrated for verbal and quantitative measures. Its foundation is application of a weighted deviations model and algorithm. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Algorithms, Computer Assisted Testing, Expert Systems
Peer reviewedMay, Kim – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1993
This book uses concepts familiar to those with a working knowledge of basic statistics and classical test theory to present item response theory models that are currently in wide use in both practical testing and research. The book would serve as a good entry-level graduate text in psychometrics and measurement methods. (SLD)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Graduate Study, Item Response Theory, Measurement Techniques
Peer reviewedKatims, Nancy; And Others – Middle School Journal, 1993
Describes the PACKETS Program for Middle School Mathematics, a research-based performance-assessment program being developed by the Educational Testing Service. The activities, based on real-life problems whose solutions must address a particular client's needs, are designed to promote student learning while allowing the teacher to document this…
