Mildly retarded children were instructed in encoding strategies or rehearsal strategy. Performance was higher for semantic encoding strategies. Seven months later the semantic condition also showed greater improvement after strategies were prompted. Performance on incidental learning tasks was enhanced for 13- but not 10-year olds. The speed at which sentences with various kinds of violations could be rejected was studied. Compatible with the sequential model was the finding that noun-verb and adjective-noun double violations did not result in shorter reaction times than noun-verb single violations, although double violations were judged less acceptable. Previous work supports the hypothesis that cardioidal strain offers a plausible mathematical model for the perceived changes in human craniofacial morphology due to growth. In two experiments, cardioidal strain caused changes in the perceived age of nonhuman profiles similar to those produced on human faces in earlier work. (Author/MH)

A multirate mathematical model is presented to support the hypothesis that different types of information are lost from a memory trace at different rates. The model is validated by two experiments assessing the retention of pictures and of sentences at three different delays by cued recall. (Author/CP)
