Cook, J. Michael; And Others – International Journal of Rehabilitation Research, 1982
The study investigated six inferential measures of attention with 140 Ss, eight to 12 years old (with 14 learning disabled and 14 nondisabled Ss at each age level). Results indicated the measures did not consistently identify learning disabled students and did not predict classroom attending behavior. (Author/MC)

Velicer, Wayne F. – Evaluation Review, 1982
A general model for prediction and association is described for the situation in which both criterion and predictor(s) are discrete variables. The approach can be employed for the general case involving any number of predictors, and the related measures of multiple and partial association are described. (Author/GK)

Yule, William; Rigley, Leslie V. – Journal of Research in Reading, 1982
Findings suggest that modestly good predictions can be made between IQ as measured by the Wechsler intelligence scales for children at age five and one-half and scores on group reading tests administered at ages seven and eight years. (FL)

Klein, Alice E. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
The test-retest reliability and predictive validity of the Northwestern Syntax Screening Test (NSST) with pre-kindergarten pupils was investigated. It was found to have moderate test-retest reliability, and to be moderately accurate in predicting general academic achievement test scores of pupils in kindergarten and first grade. (Author/GK)

Erwin, T. Dary – Reading Psychology, 1981
Provides evidence of some predictive validity of the Nelson-Denny Reading Test (NDRT) for college students. Argues that because the NDRT is more convenient and economical to administer, it can serve as a feasible alternative to the SAT when a quick verbal measure is needed in the college setting. (FL)

Nielson, Warren R.; Dobson, Keith S. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1980
Supports the discriminant validity of the Coronary-Prone Behavior Pattern, as assessed by the Jenkins Activity Survey, in relation to trait anxiety. Future research should include measures of trait anxiety to collaborate findings in a laboratory setting. (Author/JAC)

Hartnett, Rodney T.; Willingham, Warren W. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1980
Criteria which have been traditionally used to evaluate graduate student performance (grade point average, attainment of degree, time to degree, rating scales, etc.) are critically examined. The authors conclude that very little research exists in this area and that the problem of adequate criteria is quite difficult. (Author/JKS)

Cohen, S. Alan; Hyman, Joan S. – Educational Researcher, 1979
The authors contend that most research in education lacks statistical power. They feel that the poor use of statistics as a tool for enhancing internal validity must be remediated. The adoption of a new convention is proposed in order to put statistical certainty into reasonable perspective. (RLV)

Franklin, Barry A.; And Others – Research Quarterly, 1978
This study shows a consistent tendency to underestimate the finishing times of first- and second-time marathon runners. (MM)

MacKinnon, Douglas R.; Farberow, Norman L. – Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, 1976
Applying basic decision theory on a neuropsychiatric hospital population indicates that researchers using a prediction schedule will be unlikely to predict a future suicide beyond a 20 percent level of efficiency. Eliminating false negatives was more practical than eliminating false positives in increasing the efficiency of a predictive schedule.…

Ashford, Jose B.; LeCroy, Craig Winston – Adolescence, 1990
Compared three models to predict recidivism in juvenile offenders. Discriminant analyses performed on data from 91 juvenile parolees (42 nonrecidivists, 49 recidivists) revealed that Orange County Risk Assessment Instrument and Arizona Juvenile Risk Assessment Form were able to predict recidivism 18-22 percent better than chance. Contra Costa Risk…
