Peer reviewedMoss, Robert. – American Biology Teacher, 1991
An activity in which students transform an ampicillin-sensitive strain of E. coli with a plasmid containing a gene for ampicillin resistance is described. The procedure for the preparation of competent cells and the transformation of competent E. coli is provided. (KR)
Descriptors: Bacteria, College Science, DNA, Genetic Engineering
Peer reviewedFelder, Richard M. – Chemical Engineering Education, 1991
A way in which to shift the focus away from lecture and the professor during class time to student-centered discussion groups is presented. An exercise used in a course on chemical process analysis that uses the group discussion method is included. (KR)
Descriptors: Calculus, Chemistry, College Science, Cooperative Learning
Karges-Bone, Linda – Gifted Child Today (GCT), 1992
Charleston (South Carolina) Southern University has developed a summer enrichment program for gifted and motivated middle school students focusing on the science-based and mathematics-based professions, especially engineering and research. The program provides special motivational advantages to young girls through individual attention and…

Peer reviewedJanota, Claus P.; Janota, Jeanette Olach – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1991
Various candidate microphones were evaluated for acoustic coupling of hearing aids to a telephone receiver. Results from testing by 9 hearing-impaired adults found comparable listening performance with a pressure gradient microphone at a 10 decibel higher level of interfering noise than with a normal pressure-sensitive microphone. (Author/PB)
Descriptors: Acoustical Environment, Adults, Communication Aids (for Disabled), Communication Skills
Peer reviewedEhrman, Patrick – American Biology Teacher, 1990
Presented is a teaching progression that enhances learning through low-cost, manipulative transparencies. Discussed is instruction about restriction enzymes, plasmids, cutting plasmids, plasmid maps, recording data, and mapping restriction sites. Mapping wheels for student use is included. (CW)
Descriptors: Bacteria, Biochemistry, Biology, College Science
Peer reviewedMcCormick, Kevin – Studies in Higher Education, 1993
A survey of almost 1,000 research and development staff at large industrial corporations in Britain and Japan investigated differences in employment structures (market-oriented vs. organization-oriented), learning in higher education, and career expectations. Significant differences were found in attitudes of workers in the two countries.…

Gaddy, Catherine D. – New Directions for Higher Education, 1998
Increasing proportions of science and engineering faculty are in non-tenure-track positions. While part-time and other flexible scheduling options can be beneficial in meeting individual and departmental needs, resulting changes affect faculty careers, students, and the quality of academic research. Recommendations for improving the situation are…
