Peer reviewedGodeny, I.; And Others – American Journal of Physics, 1977
Describes an experiment demonstrating the frustration of totally reflected visible light. (SL)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Experiments, Light
Peer reviewedVermillion, Robert Everett – American Journal of Physics, 1977
Describes procedure for making X-ray photographs on Polaroid 3000 black and white roll film. (SL)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Instruction, Laboratory Experiments
Peer reviewedFreeland, P. W. – Journal of Biological Education, 1977
Described are nine enzyme essays for distinguishing soil samples. Colorimetric methods are used to compare enzyme levels in soils from different sites. Each soil tested had its own spectrum of activity. Attention is drawn to applications of this technique in forensic science and in studies of soil fertility. (Author/AJ)
Descriptors: Agronomy, College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures
Peer reviewedRowell, Sheila – Babel: Journal of the Australian Federation of Modern Language Teachers' Associations, 1976
Disadvantages of the use of language laboratories in language teaching are pointed out. Ways in which the language laboratory can be used helpfully for the student are suggested. The conclusion is drawn that for secondary schools the language laboratory has little advantage over a tape recorder used in class. (RM)
Descriptors: Language Instruction, Language Laboratories, Pronunciation, Second Language Learning
Peer reviewedRacle, Gabriel L. – Canadian Modern Language Review, 1976
Language laboratory use has traditionally been limited to structural and phonetic exercises. This article discusses ways to tap more effectively the laboratory's potential, and thus to provide superior language instruction for the student. (Text is in French.) (DB)
Descriptors: Audiovisual Aids, Conditioning, Language Instruction, Language Laboratories
Peer reviewedRullkotter, Bernd – System, 1976
The University of Birmingham is equipped with four language laboratories and thirteen private study booths. Use of the laboratories, but not the study booths, declines after the first term of each session. A survey was done gathering data about the users of the private study booths. (RM)
Descriptors: Audiolingual Methods, Language Instruction, Language Laboratories, Second Language Learning
Peer reviewedHaley, S. B. – American Journal of Physics, 1976
Provides construction diagrams and description of an easily constructed, versatile circuit board. (CP)
Descriptors: Construction (Process), Educational Media, Electric Circuits, Electricity
Frankel, Jill – Teacher, 1976
This month's article presents three reading skills reinforcement centers that will strengthen your individualized reading program and make it more flexible. (Editor)
Descriptors: Charts, Elementary School Students, Individualized Reading, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedBretherick, Leslie – Journal of Chemical Education, 1987
Discusses the relative instability of organic oxidants, citing early attempts at overcoming the solubility limitations in organic reaction systems. Describes the more recent introduction of new types of organic oxidant salts that have demonstrated more promising levels of stability, though unexpected explosions have still occurred. (TW)
Descriptors: Accidents, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, Fuels
Peer reviewedRoman, Pascual; Gutierrez-Zorrilla, Juan M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Shows how the Archimedes method is used to determine the density of a single crystal of ammonium oxalate monohydrate. Also shows how to calculate the density of other chemicals when they are available as single crystals. Experimental procedures and materials needed are included. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Crystallography, Density (Matter)
Peer reviewedHairfield, E. M.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Reports a consecutive first-order reaction for which the concentrations of reactant, intermediate, and products can be determined simulataneously. This reaction is the epoxidation of 2,5-di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (I) by alkaline hydroperoxidation using tert-butyl hydroperoxide and benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (Triton B) catalyst.…
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education
Peer reviewedBagnara, Joseph T.; And Others – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1985
Explains an experiment in which the rotation of a patch of skin on a tadpole results in a frog with rotated spots, proving that the spot pattern is determined long before it becomes visible. Procedures used are included. (DH)
Descriptors: Biology, College Science, Genetics, Higher Education
Peer reviewedKroll, Richard Lawrence – Journal of Geological Education, 1987
Offers suggestions and information on simplifying the construction of the Lehman seismograph. Focuses on factors related to the upper cross-piece, lower cross-piece, boom, damper, coil, and levelers. (ML)
Descriptors: College Science, Geology, Higher Education, Laboratory Equipment

Highlights of the National Education Association's (NEA) annual meeting include endorsement of a national network of "learning laboratories" designed to help restructure public education. (MLF)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Learning Laboratories, Meetings, Politics of Education
Peer reviewedBarnard, Neal D.; And Others – Journal of Medical Education, 1988
A national survey of physiology, pharmacology, and surgery departments found that while laboratory exercises using animals are common, they are not universal, and that the widely available alternatives assume diverse forms, including films, computer models, lectures, readings, and clinical clerkships.
