The need for social work professionals to remain current is addressed. The study, using a panel of 121 social workers and others, achieved a level of consensus relative to theories, methodologies, and content areas and then projected a functional model useful for intermediate and long-range program planning. In 1972 self-improvement and education were equally cited reasons for continuing education. By 1978, three-fourths of the respondents had continued their education but only half had reached the level planned in 1972. Self-improvement was the main reason for continuing. Forty-seven women from 35 to 60 years of age, enrolled in human sexuality classes for older returning students, revealed sentiments of guilt, anxiety, resentment, and inhibitions over sexual feelings. Teaching adult students requires not only academic or technical expertise but also a sensitivity to the various emotional states of adult learners.
