Ambler, Julie; Pelovitz, Kelly; Ladd, Timothy; Steucek, Guy – American Biology Teacher, 2001
Describes an experiment in which the incubation time to observe denitrification and other processes of the nitrogen cycle is reduced from 7-14 days to 24-48 hours. Presents calculations of processes in the nitrogen cycle in the form of a dichotomous key. (SAH)

Gerlovich, Jack A.; Whitsett, John; Lee, Shelley; Parsa Rahul – Science Teacher, 2001
Describes a safety program for teaching science. In the summer of 1999, specific Wisconsin safety laws, codes, and standards were researched and a training program including content, training sites, and dates was developed. One-day training programs were planned for six regions throughout the state. (SAH)

Eyster, Linda S.; Fried, Bernard – American Biology Teacher, 2000
Describes the inexpensive and safe method of using roundworms in the classroom or laboratories. Because parasitic infections are so common, students should learn about worms. Provides statistics on just how many people have a worm infection in the world. Explains how to study living nematodes, and obtain and use earthworms. (Contains 13…

Ede, Lisa – Writing Center Journal, 1996
Critiques Terrance Riley's "The Uncompromising Future of Writing Centers" and Stephen M. North's "Revisiting 'The Idea of a Writing Center'"--two articles that upset assumptions about writing centers. Suggests that while the vision of these writers may strike some as harsh, readers should turn toward rather than away from the important questions…

West, Catharine R. – Vocational Education Journal, 1996
Describes the experiences of a first-year teacher who gave up a high-paying job in industry to teach laboratory technology. Includes excerpts from the journal she kept during her first few months of teaching. (JOW)

Gokhale, Anu A. – Journal of Industrial Teacher Education, 1996
Electronics students (16 controls, 16 experimentals) designed, built, and tested an amplifier. The experimentals did so after it was designed through computer simulation (using Electronics Workbench software). The experimental group performed significantly better on problem-solving tests; both groups did the same on drill and practice tests. (SK)

Godrick, Elizabeth; Hartman, Standish – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2000
Introduces a science laboratory integrating biology and chemistry courses that includes four modules: (1) the fundamental process of reactions; (2) a semester-long project on the chemical assay of ascorbic acid; (3) human metabolism of Vitamin C; and (4) an open-ended project on the manipulation of macromolecules. (YDS)

Chambers, Shelley L.; Schmittgen, Janet; Allan, Carolyn R. – American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 2000
This paper describes the training of first-year students in technical skills by students in the second year of a laboratory course. The authors conclude that peer teaching is a very useful teaching method for reinforcing technical skills and providing better instructor-student ratios in the laboratory. (Author)

Ohly, Karl Peter – Science and Education, 2002
Discusses interactions between experimental systems and modes of interpretation. Uses the discovery of the 'base pairing principle' by Erwin Chargaff as an example to show how established laboratory routines and their development interact with the underlying theoretical framework and the 'Denkstil' (style of thought) of a collective of researchers…
