Little People Giving BIG Talks on Art: The Young Gallery Guides
Journal of Museum Education, v50 n2 p278-288 2025
This paper reports on "Young Gallery Guides", a pilot program of child-led guided tours undertaken by the HOTA (Home of the Arts) Gallery on the Gold Coast, Australia. The program, which ran from July to November 2024, included nine children aged between 7 and 12. It culminated in offering some scheduled activities to the general public, entitled "Little People Giving BIG Talks on Art." Before outlining the program in detail, the paper situates it among several other initiatives worldwide. In addition, it advocates that the work carried out by the program acts on the five instances of cultural mediation highlighted by Carmen Mörsch: affirmative, reproductive, deconstructive, reformative and transformative. This paper seeks to contribute to studies on children's participation in museums and art galleries by presenting ideas and reflections on ways children can play a more active role in museological practice.
