Martinez, Joseph G. R.; Johnson, Peder J. – Reading Research Quarterly, 1982
Points up the importance of encoding time to the global act of reading. (AEA)
Descriptors: Adults, College Students, Reading Comprehension, Reading Processes
Gunnison, Judy; And Others – Academic Therapy, 1982
The theory postulating a dichotomy between sequential and simultaneous processing is reviewed and its implications for remediating reading problems are reviewed. Research is cited on sequential-simultaneous processing for early and advanced reading. A list of remedial strategies based on the processing dichotomy addresses decoding and lexical…

Sarachan-Deily, Ann Beth – Volta Review, 1982
Evidence from the study indicated that the hearing impaired develop syntactic patterns, constructions, and processing abilities for language that differ from those used by the hearing but that semantic patterns and processing abilities of the hearing impaired are similar to those of the hearing. (Author/SB)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Hearing Impairments, Language Acquisition, Language Processing

Moscicki, Eve K.; Tallal, Paula – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1981
Presents study exploring oral reading errors of normally developing readers to determine any developmental differences in learning phoneme-grapheme units; to discover if the grapheme representations of some phonemes are more difficult to read than others; and to replicate results reported by Fowler, et. al. Findings show most oral reading errors…

Coltheart, Max – Visible Language, 1981
Illustrates how one can test a multicomponent model of reading by observing the different forms that acquired reading disorder takes as a consequence of different patterns of damage to the brain. (HOD)
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Models, Neurological Impairments, Phonology

Well, Arnold D.; Pollatsek, Alexander – Visible Language, 1981
Perceptual processes of reading can be investigated meaningfully without having to make detailed statements about higher-level processing and about the nature of the interactions between downward flowing cognitive information and upward flowing information resulting from visual processing. (HOD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Phonology, Reading Comprehension, Reading Difficulties

Hoetker, James – College English, 1982
Uses the fields of reading and literature to illustrate the difficulty of interdisciplinary cooperation. Notes how the exchange of ideas in these fields can stimulate needed research. (RL)
Descriptors: English Instruction, Higher Education, Interdisciplinary Approach, Literature Appreciation
Moore, Phillip J. – Australian Journal of Reading, 1981
Examines research studies examining children's concept of reading activity and their attitudes about reading. (HTH)

Truax, Roberta Ringhand; Edwards, A. Bertha – Volta Review, 1980
Reading in the hearing impaired student is considered in terms of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, processes, and developmental programing. (SB)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Hearing Impairments, Pragmatics, Reading Instruction

Dreher, Mariam Jean – Reading Research Quarterly, 1981
Examines the instantiation hypothesis, which holds that as individuals read, they infer and store contextually appropriate examples for general terms in sentences. Concludes that the hypothesis is appropriate for college readers but not for those in elementary school. (AEA)

Ewoldt, Carolyn – Reading Research Quarterly, 1981
Describes the reading in sign language of 25 stories by four young deaf readers. Suggests that the reading processes of the deaf closely resemble those of hearing readers. (AEA)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Deafness, Elementary Secondary Education, Psycholinguistics

Hicks, Carolyn; Jackson, Peter – Journal of Research in Reading, 1981
Forty dyslexic children were given a version of the Stroop test which requires subjects to respond to attributes of a set of stimuli while ignoring the conflicting information that derives from another attribute. A negative linear relationship emerged indicating that greater reading proficiency was associated with less interference. (MKM)
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Elementary Education, Perception Tests, Reading Ability
Beebe, Mona J.; Phillips-Riggs, Linda – Elements: Translating Theory into Practice, 1980
Explores children's predicting and inferencing strategies for understanding written materials by analyzing an example of one second grader's oral reading. Discusses theory of reading comprehension processes, as well as how teachers can develop student's predicting and inferencing abilities at word, sentence and suprasentential levels. (RH)

Campbell, B. G. – Journal of Reading, 1980
Describes a model that distinguishes seven types of meaning that can function in reading: discoursal, lexical, morphological, propositional, syntactic, rhetorical, and functional. (MKM)

Taylor, Nancy E. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1980
Focusing primarily on learning disabled children, the article briefly reviews the literature related to perceptual skills required in reading acquisition and the validity of current perceptual measures to tap these task-related perceptual abilities, and proposes an informal task-related measure to overcome the drawbacks of more formal measures of…
