An Anthology of Readings in Elementary Social Studies. Social Studies Readings 4.
Walsh, Huber M., Ed.
The 50 articles in this anthology were drawn from the Elementary Education Supplement of Social Education. The collection of articles is aimed at teachers, and its purpose is to provide inspiration and worthwhile suggestions for upgrading social studies instruction in the elementary school. The articles for this anthology were selected by a team of social studies educators. Their criteria for selection were: a) the inspirational quality for teachers; b) the feasibility of applying suggestions given by the author; and, c) the potential of the article for improving the quality of teaching. The articles are divided into 8 topical sections: 1) Social Studies and the Urban Crisis; 2) Inquiry Oriented Teaching; 3) Individualizing Instruction; 4) Teaching Valuing; 5) The Treatment of Minority Groups; 6) The Social Studies and the Social Sciences; 7) Social Studies Skills Development; and 8) Upgrading Social Studies Instruction. An index to the location of authors' articles in Social Education concludes the book. (Author/JLB)
