Massachusetts State Dept. of Education, Boston. Bureau of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Materials contained in this Massachusetts curriculum guide are based on concepts and procedures developed by the Highway Users Federation for Safety and Mobility. The guide examines the philosophy of driver education, discusses such legal aspects as certification of students and teachers, presents a comprehensive classroom and behind-the-wheel syllabus, and enumerates resource materials. The first section of the guide, organization and administration, discusses roles and responsibilities of professionals involved; general objectives, courses, scheduling, and evaluation of the program; the vehicle; public secondary school teacher certification requirements and procedures; student certification; Registry of Motor Vehicles policies and procedures; and accident procedures. The second section contains the instructional program. The curriculum format details the part, unit, episode, episode principle and purpose, concepts, supporting principles, behavioral objectives, learning activities, and evaluation. Major parts of the curriculum guide deal with orientation tasks, on-highway tasks, readiness tasks, and improvement tasks. The appendix contains lesson plans, suggested forms, bibliography, sources of instructional materials, and an evaluation sheet for the guide. (TA)
