A Research and Training Model for Pre-Retirement Education Programs for Minority Populations.
Boyack, Virginia L.
This report covers the first phase of a study on the development, administration and evaluation of a Pre-Retirement Education Research and Training Program for Minority Program Leadership Aides. Thirty-eight Aides, all Black, were trained in an intensive 66-hour program to act as PREP Aides in assisting with the development of PREP Life Planning Programs with high school students, middle-aged persons, and retired adults. The trainees, aged 45-72 years, represented diverse income levels, the largest percentage being retired or unemployed. All were residents of the South Central Los Angeles area. A pre-test/post-test instrument was developed, capable of measuring levels of information and attitudes about aging, community resources, pre-retirement and retirement issues, and retirement planning and living in general. Findings indicate that an effective training program can produce Life Planning Program Aides capable of assisting with the development of programs relevant to pre- and post-retirement issues for minority populations. Trainees indicated significant changes in personal attitudes and levels of information about pre-retirement and retirement living issues as well as an increased practical understanding of human dynamics and group leadership techniques.
