Research which has investigated factors affecting pupils' attitudes toward school subjects is reviewed, examining descriptive, correlational, and experimental research on students' attitudes toward several different school subjects at various grade levels. Although many weaknesses exist in the methodology and theoretical basis of much of the research, several conclusions are warranted. The teacher, through personal enthusiasm, relationships with students, and the establishment of a positive classroom learning environment, is seen as an important factor in affecting attitudes. Reward-giving is not clearly related to attitude development, and instructional methods or curricula do not seem to influence attitudes significantly. (A bibliography is appended.) (Author/MH)
