This report includes a discussion of population trends, the widening role of schools, changing patterns of teaching, and implications for teacher education. Issues in preservice teacher education include the selection of individuals who plan to enter the teaching profession, preparation for teaching the basic skills, practice teaching experience, preparation for primary and secondary school teachers, and demand for specialist teachers. Some discussion of the importance of continuing professional development of teachers is made and recommendations are provided. (JN)
