Computing at Brown University: A Survey Research Report.
Shields, Mark
Use of computers at Brown University and attitudes toward computing were investigated in 1984. Major areas of interest were: frequency of weekly computer use, past experience using computers, when respondents first used a computer, their gender, student status, years at the university, major, and parental and familial influences on computer use. Questionnaire responses were obtained from 1,106 students, 340 staff and 176 faculty (both campus- and hospital-based). Findings include: over 85% of respondents had some previous experience using a computer and nearly three-quarters had positive experiences with computers; 70% generally utilized computer facilities on a weekly basis; over 60% of computer users had done word processing at least once during the last 6 months; the second most frequent use was on-line information searching, followed by electronic communication, data analysis and computation, computer games, and storing personal records and other materials; and there was broad interest in expanding computer-oriented instruction and in offering more mini-courses on using computers. Numerous tables are included, and information on sampling procedures and response rates is appended, along with the questionnaire. (SW)
