The Evaluation of Writing across the Curriculum at Gallaudet College during the 1984-85 Academic Year.
Kelly, Leonard
Intended to complement two other summaries about writing across the curriculum at Gallaudet College for deaf students, this report describes the first academic year of the college's writing across the curriculum program (WAC), detailing various instructors' projects and their personal opinions about the program, as well as how the students felt about their projects and how WAC affected their writing and learning. Following an introduction, the report provides a summary of data collection and discusses the principal observations and recommendations. The first major section of the report, "Implementation of Writing across the Curriculum," describes the 1984-1985 WAC courses and faculty sentiments about the project. Specifically, the section notes that faculty members observed both favorable and unfavorable effects in their projects and presents a number of their ideas for improving the preparation, guidance, and support of future faculty who adopt the program. The second major section of the report, "The Impact of WAC on Students," offers student opinions on the project--bolstered by survey results--as well as an extended appraisal of the performance of one student. This section ends with observations and recommendations related to the implementation of the WAC program. The conclusion of the report addresses the particular benefits of writing across the curriculum for deaf students and the potential advantages that a continuation of the program would bring to both students and faculty. (References and appendixes containing a copy of a student questionnaire and samples of student writing are attached.) (NKA)
