The Adult Religious Retreat and the Higher Learning: Theory, Design, and Evaluation.
Counelis, James Steve
This paper presents a case study of a Christian retreat held by the Federation of Greek Orthodox Choirs of the Western States of the Diocese of San Francisco (California), March 14-06, 1986 at St. Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center, Squaw Valley, California. The religious retreat is defined as a short-term, intensive educational program designed to be religiously informative and spiritually rewarding, and the study involved seven retreat program segments that included evaluations of: (1) the retreat's effectiveness; (2) a liturgy rehearsal; (3) a retreat theme, "Music and Spiritual Experience"; (4) a second retreat theme, "Sacred Time for Adam, Eve, and Me"; (5) a discussion of the relationship between liturgical music and computers; (6) the use of quiet time periods and meditation; and (7) religious services. Other topics included a statistical comparison of religious information and spiritual rewards across retreat events and general principles for designing religious retreats. Appendices include: (1) a list of church leaders; (2) suggested guidelines for choir retreats; (3) the retreat schedule; (4) the retreat discussion guide; (5) references; (6) the retreat's program evaluation form; (7) the facilities' and services' evaluation form; (8) a report of statistical coefficients; (9) selected lecture notes; and (10) written evaluation comments. Nine tables and three charts are included. (JHP)
