Beginning Language Students Can Write: Integrating the Language Experience Chart and Process Writing.
Adams, Carole
A method for teaching second language writing to beginning students that combines the Language Experience Approach and process writing is described. The method limits the writing task and fosters success. The lesson-by-lesson implementation plan outlined helps teachers guide students from the conception of a writing topic to a first draft, through consecutive drafts, and ultimately to the final copy of a composition. The process of writing becomes the basis for second language communication. After an introductory chapter, the second chapter describes the Language Experience Approach, what is involved in process writing, and the essentials of a student-centered classroom. It also lists the materials needed and their possible uses in the classroom. Chapter 3 presents a series of 20 lesson plans beginning with a shared experience and ending in a final draft of a composition. The fourth chapter suggests ways that teachers can elicit feedback from students to help determine how effective their instruction is, and discusses holistic evaluation techniques. (Author/MSE)
