The Impact of Late Registration on Academic Success and Persistence of Students at a Community and Technical College
Cornille, Keith T.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
Affordable education and retraining are essential to maintain a skilled workforce. Community and technical colleges are positioned to meet these needs. Open access and late enrollment may be linked to student retention and attrition. This study examined the enrollment records of 7317 first time credit-seeking students between 2005 and 2007. Students were enrolled at a large community and technical college in the Midwest. Student persistence was compared to grade point average (GPA) and registration behavior. Chi-square and regression analyses affirmed previous research. Students who enrolled late persisted at a lower rate (51.9%) than those who enrolled early or on-time (76.7%). The likelihood of continued enrollment was higher for late registrants with a higher GPA, as were course and term completion. This study affirmed that registration behavior had an impact on student persistence. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
