An Examination of the Leadership Styles and Lived Experiences of the Black Male Principal
Renell Robinson Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, California Baptist University
The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership styles and personal and professional experiences that exist in current and former Black male principals. The essence of their experiences and common themes will help identify factors that played a crucial role in their journey and proposed to 1) contribute to additional studies, 2) highlight potential contributions in the development of mentorship programs, or 3) have the participants' leadership experiences and current approaches influenced by their lived experiences contribute to earning a principal position. This qualitative research explores current and former Black male principals' leadership styles and personal and professional experiences. To best reflect the thoughts, careers, and lives of Black males in this study, the researcher used a phenomenological qualitative method, including structured interviews as a data collection tool. The participants shared their personal and professional understandings and experiences regarding their perceived leadership abilities in pursuing and obtaining the principal position. The study's findings reveal a pervasive belief among Black male principals that their faith and spirituality are anchors, guiding them through the complexities and challenges in education (Dantley, 2003). The participants emphasize the crucial role of staff members having a voice in the decision-making process. The findings suggest that Black males must be conscious of how safe and comfortable they make others feel. Additionally, this study's findings suggest the effects of how they are perceived, as well as the effects of supportive families.
