Developing Academic Resilience in Hispanic Student Teachers Undergoing Florida Certification Exam Preparation
Crystal Veber
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Arizona State University
The Florida Department of Education requires that student teachers complete the Florida Teacher Certification General Knowledge (GK) Exam for certification. As of 2021, the Florida pass rate for the GK exam, the first of the required exams, is 63% and the pass rate at FIU is a similar 62%. There were also 28,517 GK retakes statewide that year. As evidenced by the low pass rates and the tens of thousands of retakes, the GK is serving as a stumbling block for student teachers on their pathway to certification and employment. Research shows that there are statistically significant differences in teacher exam outcomes for minority students. Florida International University is ranked #3 in total Hispanic enrollment with 64% of students identifying as Hispanic. Thus, to create an effective innovation to improve student outcomes on the GK, it is important to consider the particular needs of this majority Hispanic student population. The purpose of my action research study is to develop academic resilience in Hispanic student teachers undergoing Florida certification exam preparation. Negative beliefs and self-perception contribute to performance issues more severely for Hispanic students, so this study focused on the remediation of four major emotional aptitudes relating to academic resilience: self-advocacy, self-regulation, persistence and motivation, and emotional regulation. This study found that incorporating mindset interventions that allow students to learn and apply coping skills directly improved all four aspects of academic resilience. This study also found that AI generative assignments created positive engagement opportunities for students to practice for exams and receive instant feedback to improve their self-advocacy in the preparation process, but the quality of the AI's output varies between the free and paid versions.
