Predictors of Success: Military Students in Doctoral Programs
Geni S. Perryment
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
This study aimed to identify factors of success and attrition within military students in doctoral programs. It also sought to examine performance in clinical doctoral-level programs to determine significant differences in outcome measures between military and nonmilitary. This study utilized archival data from five clinical psychology doctoral (PhD/PsyD) programs in California. The data included university records and entrance survey information from students enrolled between 2009 and 2015. Outcome measures included in these data were grade point average (GPA) within student's enrolled program, previous graduate school GPA, undergraduate GPA, and withdrawal status. Further, the data provided information regarding military status, age at entry to the program, gender, ethnicity, and if the student earned a graduate degree prior to attending the program. A total of 795 participants were included in this study, with 30 participants identifying as military students. Findings showed no differences in outcome measures between military and nonmilitary students. The study also did not identify any predictive factors distinguishing a military student from a nonmilitary student.
