From Reconnection to Graduation: Meeting the Needs of Returning Adult Students at Community Colleges. Pathways to Success for Students with Some College, No Degree
Tennessee Board of Regents - The College System of Tennessee
Across Tennessee, more than 595,000 working-age adults have earned college credit but do not have a postsecondary credential. In response to the growing economic demands over the past decade, many states launched efforts to re-engage students with some college but no degree (SCND). In 2018, Tennessee launched "Tennessee Reconnect," a last-dollar scholarship for adults that covers tuition and mandatory fees at community colleges. While statewide initiatives like Tennessee Reconnect have lowered the barriers to higher education access for many SCND adults, these efforts alone may be insufficient to ensure adults' success. The Pathways to Success for Students with Some College, No Degree project seeks to build a body of evidence about the challenges that returning adults at Tennessee community colleges face, the strategies that promote their success after they return, and the data that can be leveraged to support their success. This paper addresses several topics related to SCND students: (1) Who are the "Potential" Reconnectors? (2) Who are the Reconnectors? and (3) From Reconnection to Graduation -- Which reconnecting students are likely to succeed at a Tennessee community college?
