Education and Democracy through the Janusz Korczak's Lens
Mariola Strahlberg
Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education, v22 n3 p70-75 2024
When a hero is lost to history, it matters that his work and name should be discussed. Such is the case for Janusz Korczak or Henryk Goldszmit, a courageous fighter for democracy in Poland during the first half of the 20th century. Korczak, the pen name he used for his writings, founded two orphanages where he provided an environment for all the children that supported them as democratic citizens. He believed that youth had value and the opportunities he provided were consistent with that belief. This piece begins to share how he established principles and put them into successful effect.
