Collaborative Support for Children's Success through Early Childhood Family Literacy Programs

Dimensions of Early Childhood, v52 n3 p8-13 2024
Collaborative partnerships between families and educators are recognized as significant factors related to children's academic success (Bettencourt et al., 2023). Additionally, parental involvement is positively correlated with early social emotional development (Stamou et al., 2023). Early childhood educators and leaders play an important role in supporting parents and creating inclusive environments that foster meaningful parent involvement in their programs. Family literacy programs encourage parents and children as they learn and grow together (Ohio Literacy Resource Center, 2021a). Family literacy programs often include interactive literacy activities for parents and children, support in parenting activities related to literacy development, adult literacy education activities connected to personal goal-setting and economic self-sufficiency, and age-appropriate activities for parents to implement in preparation for children to begin enrollment in formal school settings (Mortoo, 2023; National Center for Families Learning, 2023). This article examines a family literacy program in Louisiana to bridge achievement gaps for children from poverty-stricken backgrounds.
