Tales from the Social Justice Crypt: History, Pedagogy, and Horror in the Classroom
Katrina Yeaw
History Teacher, v58 n2 p175-208 2025
Educators in history must find new and creative ways to attract students to programs, and horror cinema can provide a unique opportunity to bring social and racial justice issues into the classroom and engage with critical social theory. This article describes how the author created a course at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock--called "Gender and Horror"--to evaluate and disrupt sexual and racial attitudes and introduce students to critical social theory related to the study of gender, sexual minorities, race, and ethnicity. Students are asked to examine the background, context, and gender analysis of each assigned film to gain insight into the cultural, social, and political dynamics that shape their production and reception. Modules are provided for course layout along with a discussion rubric that is used to grade weekly discussion board postings.
