Fostering Belonging for All Students and Employees in Schools and Other Organisations: Pathways to Inclusive Excellence
Intercultural Education, v36 n4 p458-478 2025
This paper unfolds against the backdrop of the immigrant experiences of the authors, an intergenerational team from two different countries and two different professional roles, but who are united by their immigrant experience and commitments to foster the sense of belonging and advance inclusive excellence across educational institutions and other organisations. After defining foundational concepts that inform understanding of how intersecting socio-cultural identities shape the human experience, they explain the six pillars of inclusive excellence, thus taking readers on a reflective and practical journey that inspires transformation of self and community. Examples of practices that foster a sense of belonging in schools and other organisations are shared to illuminate the practicality of the frameworks discussed in the paper. The conclusion offers practical strategies to actualise the theoretical highlights of the paper by creating learning and working environments where everyone feels that they belong to a community and can thrive, thus helping their organisations to achieve valuable outcomes.
