Living the Dream of Green Acres: Boy with Autism Finds Acceptance and Success Thanks to 4-H
Richardson, Ginny
Exceptional Parent, v36 n4 p55-57 Apr 2006
Twelve-year-old Aaron Zibricky, a member of the Lucky Clovers 4-H Club, entered his prize sheep, Star, in the 2005 Will County Fair in Illinois. Zibricky, who is diagnosed with autism, had worked and strived for this moment, putting in long hours feeding, cleaning and shearing the sheep and learning showmanship skills. No one was more elated at winning a ribbon for Reserve Grand Champion than Aaron. His parents and family had supported him throughout his journey to success. Aaron had been helped tremendously by Through Person Centered Planning (PCP), a discovery process that identifies the strengths, desires and hopes of individuals with special needs. In this article, the author explains how Aaron's parents learned of his interests in living in a farm through PCP. This article also describes how Lucky Clovers 4-H Club helps special children realize their goals and their potentials.
