Bring Discipline to Your Web Site
Zaner, John; Wilson, Glenn
Tech Directions, v64 n10 p21-24 May 2005
As more educators serve as "Web masters" of Web sites for courses, they soon discover that as a site grows it becomes increasingly inconsistent and more difficult to manage. The situation results, to some extent, from the fact that there is a lot learned along the way and the site represents a growing level of expertise. However, it also arises from the fact that most of the literature and other resources relied upon in developing web sites focuses on the basics of HTML, file, paths, page layout, and file types. They do not address techniques that allow for building sites that grow well and that can easily be maintained. This article introduces several basic techniques that go beyond those elements, and which, if applied to recent efforts, can significantly reduce growth-related problems. (Contains 2 figures.)
