EPSS Needs Assessment: Oops, I Forgot How to Do That!
Nguyen, Frank
Performance Improvement, v44 n9 p33-39 Oct 2005
How many times have you attended a marathon training class only to return to your job and promptly forget what you learned? How many times have you programmed your VCR, only to find yourself searching for the manual six months later? The reality is that humans accumulate a vast amount of life experience and knowledge. Adult learning theory suggests that we only retain novel information if it is somehow relevant to us. The quandary of the adult learner presents an interesting challenge for training and human performance professionals: How can they support the employees' performance knowing that the information imparted to them may not be immediately relevant or applicable? Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS), introduced by Glory Gery in 1991, are one potential solution to this problem. Rather than focusing on upfront training, EPSS seeks to provide employees with "individual online access to the full range of...systems to permit job performance" (Gery, 1991). This article summarizes a needs assessment that was conducted to determine the types of EPSS end users and training professionals believe would be valuable in enabling human performance. The results indicate that systems to support on-the-job training, context-sensitive help for software procedures, and visually based EPSS were rated highest among the sample population.
