Sun, Wind & Earth: Programs Prepare Workers for Success in Green-Collar Markets
Carr, Coeli
Community College Journal, v79 n5 p26-31 Apr-May 2009
As workers continue to slough their way through a prolonged economic downturn, many are finding hope, and perhaps a little stability, in a new crop of emerging and revitalized industries. Business and all levels of government are making a concerted effort to protect the environment and develop sustainable energies. Community colleges have become the "go to" destinations to learn a new brand of skills. Whether through existing industries with an environmental conscience or emerging markets born out of a growing need, students and professionals across the country are pinning their economic futures on green-collar job prospects. In this article, the author takes a look at how three community college programs--tied to three green-collar industries (solar energy, wind energy, and sustainable horticulture)--are preparing students for future success.
