Jacoby, Larry L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1983
Experiments demonstrating that perceptual identification and recognition memory both rely on memory for single prior processing episodes, contrary to common assumption, are reported. The balance between data-driven and conceptually-driven processing in reading is explored, and the effects of changing the subject's reliance on one or the other…

Fingeret, Arlene – Adult Education Quarterly, 1983
In-depth unstructured interviews and participant observation of 43 adults showed that illiterates create reciprocal networks to which they contribute a range of skills. Illiterate adults demonstrate varying abilities to decode the social world and take action; that is, illiteracy does not imply dependence. (SK)

Mayfield, Margie I. – Journal of Educational Research, 1983
Kindergarten children received prereading instruction based on a code systems approach. Results suggest that: (1) kindergarten children can learn the concepts and vocabulary of code systems; and (2) such instruction is related to their perception of the nature and purpose of reading and can be incorporated into existing kindergarten programs. (PP)

Navon, David; Shimron, Joseph – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1981
Describes three experiments designed to determine whether grapheme-to-phoneme rules are automatically applied when a word pattern is encoded. Concludes that grapheme-to-phoneme translation is a natural response to written words, at least when naming is required, and that mediation by visual mechanisms can be ruled out. (Author/MES)

Research investigating vocabulary and comprehension achievement, intelligence quotients, and reading error analysis indicates that dependence on within-word (intraword) characteristics is more important for beginning reading success than is reliance on between-word (interword) analysis. (CJ)
