Betz, M. Austin; Levin, Joel R. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1982
Logically consistent hypothesis-testing for factorial analysis of variance designs is proposed in the context of a hierarchical model. It is shown that all of the hypotheses associated with the traditional factorial model are conceptually independent and occupy the lowest levels of the hierarchy. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Data Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Models
Ryan, Joseph P. – New Directions for Testing and Measurement, 1983
One of the major theoretical and practical developments in testing is latent trait analysis and item response theory. This report provides a guide for practitioners in understanding, evaluating, and using these developments to meet their testing needs. (Author)

Thorne, Gaylord L. – Nurse Educator, 1983
Describes practical methods for designing courses and measuring student growth. Indicates the importance of clear course objectives and suggests techniques to assist in guiding student nurses to an acceptable level of competence. (JOW)

Frazier, Calvin M. – Educational Leadership, 1983
Colorado now requires applicants for teaching certificates to pass a basic skills test in spelling, English language usage, and mathematics and to demonstrate acceptable speaking ability. Student teachers must also complete this screening. Applicants have four chances to complete the test. (MLF)

Sullivan, Patricia M. – American Annals of the Deaf, 1982
Two studies investigated the effects of administration modifications on subtest scaled scores of the Wechsler-Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R). Performance scale rated different groups of 57 severely/profoundly hearing-impaired children. Total communication was found to result in higher scores on all subtests in the genetic and…

Cantor, Joan H.; Spiker, Charles C. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1982
Strategies of kindergarten children in discrimination learning were studied in a factorial design with temporal placements of two introtact probes and two types of pretraining. Results support the expectation that the posttrial probe would improve the short-term efficiency of children in both pretraining conditions. (Author/MP)
Descriptors: Cognitive Ability, Discrimination Learning, Hypothesis Testing, Kindergarten Children
Frentz, Thomas S. – Southern Speech Communication Journal, 1983
Argues that reliance upon verification procedures has inhibited theory building in communication. Advances four falsification procedures and presents examples from communication studies. Offers several implications these procedures have for empirical research in communication. (PD)

Bassoff, Evelyn Silten; Glass, Gene V. – Counseling Psychologist, 1982
Applied meta-analytic techniques to data derived from a collection of 26 studies relating to sex roles and mental health to find the average magnitude and direction of the correlation. Results indicated that masculine and androgynous subjects were associated with higher levels of mental health than feminine counterparts. (JAC)

Tarling, Roger – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
The Mean Cost Rating, P(A) from Signal Detection Theory, Kendall's rank correlation coefficient tau, and Goodman and Kruskal's gamma measures of predictive power are compared and shown to be different transformations of the statistic S. Gamma is generally preferred for hypothesis testing. Measures of association for ordered contingency tables are…

Atkinson, Bill – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1982
The author critiques the program design and educational aspects of the Shell Games, a program developed by Apple Computer, Inc., which can be used by the teacher to design objective tests for adaptation to specific assessment needs. (For related articles, see EC 142 959-962.) (Author)

Lusk, Edward J.; Wright, Haviland – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
Results are presented which suggest that the learning occurring between two sections of the Group Embedded Fiqures Test is independent of the order in which the sections are worked. (Author/GK)

Chandler, Harry N., Ed. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1982
To eliminate some of the unfairness in graduation requirements for handicapped students, the author proposes a system in which secondary students would leave school when their goals were achieved. In doing away with the diploma, his approach would also mark the end of compulsory attendance, required classes, and competency testing. (CL)
