Peer reviewedStalnaker, Louise D.; Creaghead, Nancy A. – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1982
Language samples were obtained from 12 Head Start preschool children under the following three experimental conditions: Condition I, Retelling a Story with Toys; Condition II, Playing with Toys; Condition III, Toys with Questions. Results indicated that retelling a story produced the largest mean length of utterance, but toys and questions…
Descriptors: Disadvantaged Youth, Evaluation Methods, Language Tests, Preschool Education
Peer reviewedBauserman, Deborah N.; Obrzut, John E. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
Elaborative rehearsal strategies rather than nonelaborative rehearsal strategies (repetition only) discriminated between the two groups of fifth and sixth graders. The organizational ability represented in elaborative rehearsal strategies was the hypothesized mechanism responsible for the better long-term memory and total recall observed in…
Descriptors: Comparative Testing, Intermediate Grades, Memory, Reading Ability
Peer reviewedLuftig, Jeffrey T.; Norton, Willis P. – Journal of Studies in Technical Careers, 1981
The purpose of this article is to review applications of reliability formulas and to recommend more appropriate methods of determining the reliability of affective instruments. (SK)
Descriptors: Affective Measures, Error of Measurement, Measurement Techniques, Test Reliability
Peer reviewedTversky, Amos; Gati, Itamar – Psychological Review, 1982
The coincidence hypothesis predicts that dissimilarity between objects that differ on two separable dimensions is larger than predicted from their unidimensional differences on the basis of triangle inequality and segmental additivity. The coincidence hypothesis was supported in two-dimensional stimuli studies. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Classification, Discriminant Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedFranklin, Melvin R., Jr.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1982
Examined the extent of examiner error during administration of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) by practicing school psychologists and school psychology students eligible for state certification as psychometrists. A number of examiner item scoring and administration errors were observed for numerous subtests. (RC)
Descriptors: Error Patterns, Examiners, Intelligence Quotient, Intelligence Tests
Peer reviewedVan Cantfort, Thomas E.; Rimpau, James B. – Sign Language Studies, 1982
Reviews methodologies of sign language studies with chimpanzees and compares major findings of those studies with studies of human children. Considers relevance of input conditions for language acquisition, evidence used to demonstrate linguistic achievements, and application of rigorous testing procedures in developmental psycholinguistics.…
Descriptors: Language Processing, Language Research, Preschool Children, Primates
Peer reviewedBecker, Jerry P. – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
The material opens with a brief history of mathematics competitions in China. Translations of the problems that made up the two 1979 contest papers used are provided. The first set emphasized basic knowledge and degree of mastery, the second set emphasized application of knowledge and analysis of problems. (MP)
Descriptors: Mathematics Education, Problem Solving, Secondary Education, Secondary School Mathematics
Peer reviewedHirstein, James J. – Mathematics Teacher, 1981
Data on the ability of pupils to deal with measurement concepts at the middle and high school levels are discussed. Results on items related to area and volume concepts indicate that conceptual problems account for most of the errors that students make on these topics. (MP)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Geometric Concepts, Mathematical Concepts, Mathematics Education
Peer reviewedRonis, David L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
Many researchers draw the conclusion that one independent variable has more impact than another without testing the null hypothesis that their impact is equal. This paper presents and recommends a technique for testing the relative magnitude of effects, rather than basing conclusions solely on descriptive statistics. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Models, Research Design
Gow, Lyn; Ward, James – Australian Journal of Developmental Disabilities, 1981
Sample data for the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT) were obtained for 90 regular high school students (Group 2) and 41 mildly intellectually handicapped (MIH) adolescents (Group 1) undergoing work preparation training. (Author)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Cognitive Style, Developmental Disabilities, Psychological Testing
Peer reviewedHutcheson, James W. – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
A contest for general mathematics students is briefly described. It includes tests, congratulatory letters, and face-to-face competition. (MP)
Descriptors: Achievement Need, Competition, Grade 10, Mathematics Instruction
Peer reviewedBagozzi, Richard P. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1981
Canonical correlation analysis is considered to be a general model for bivariate and multivariate statistical methods. Some problems involving assumptions and statistical tests for parameters exist for social science data. A resolution for these problems is presented by treating canonical correlation as a special case of linear structural…
Descriptors: Correlation, Data Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedWalker, N. William – Journal of School Psychology, 1981
Investigated the modification of impulsive responding to WISC-R subtests using a procedure which forced the child to delay before responding. Screened boys, ages 8-0 to 8-11, on the basis of cognitive tempo. Retesting showed the forced delay administration significantly improved the scoring of Impulsives but not of Reflectives. (Author/RC)
Descriptors: Children, Cognitive Style, Comparative Analysis, Intelligence Tests
Cornwell, J. B. – Training, 1980
Suggests ways to minimize the risk of training failure and ensure that training accomplishes its objectives. Explains key differences to be learned in order to use the appropirate method of applying quality assurance and quality control. Examines five quality factors to be measured, including pre- and post-training testing devices. (CT)
Descriptors: Professional Training, Program Effectiveness, Quality Control, Testing
Balsley, Irol W. – Balance Sheet, 1979
Describes an attempt to develop a method for predicting success in learning shorthand skills. Results indicated that complex perceptual psychomotor skills, like shorthand, are predicted better when a complex multitask battery is used than when traditional methods of testing are used alone. (BM)
Descriptors: Achievement, Achievement Tests, Educational Assessment, Predictive Measurement
