Sigman, Marian; Coles, Peter – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1980
Eye movement and fixation responses of three- to six-year-old children and adults were recorded during a pattern recognition task. The results suggest that visual fixations do not always reflect active attention, and that direct fixations of visual information are clearly not sufficient and may not be necessary for problem solving. (Author/MP)

Poon, Leonard W.; Fozard, James L. – Journal of Gerontology, 1980
Age-related differences in continuous recognition memory were assessed in adults. High and low frequency words were presented to the subject one at a time. No age difference was found in recognition latency or errors. Low frequency words were recognized faster and with higher accuracy. (Author)

Science, 1980
Presented is experimental evidence that humans develop strong preferences for objects that become familiar through repeated exposure, even when the exposures are so degraded that they cannot be discriminated as stimuli previously seen. Implications are made regarding other studies where affective discriminations are made with very little stimulus…

Liu, In-Mao; And Others – Cognition, 1996
Noting that the naming of Chinese characters involves lexical access not present in alphabetic orthographies, this study sought to locate the frequency effects in lexical decisions and naming of Chinese characters. Results indicated that a clear frequency/regularity interaction exists in regular and lexical naming, but this interaction is…

Flexer, Roberta J. – Teaching Exceptional Children, 1989
A strategy is presented for teaching arithmetic to students with mental retardation, based on subitizing, skill of recognizing number of objects in a set without actually counting, and pattern recognition. The strategy helps children understand concept of addition by representing number configurations on 5-frames and 10-frames, and reduces need…

Clarke, Doug – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1990
The author, using a weight machine in an airport lounge, varies the machine's input parameters of height and gender to generate data sets of ideal weight. These data are later used at in-service workshops and in both primary and secondary classrooms to explore patterns and make predictions. (JJK)

Loehle, Craig – Journal of Creative Behavior, 1994
This discussion of the discovery process in science suggests that discoveries are often made by a pattern recognition process which includes elaboration of a perceived pattern involving development of a descriptive vocabulary, elucidation of mathematical relations and measures, development of measurement instruments and techniques, and deduction…

Fiske, Harold E. – Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, 1996
Describes a connectionist, or neural network, model of musical learning that can be used to explain research by Harold Fiske in musical pattern discrimination that shows that the identification of tonal and rhythmic relationships between patterns requires varying amounts of reaction time. Discusses the model's importance for music education. (DSK)

VanDeventer, Stephanie S.; White, James A. – Simulation & Gaming, 2002
Investigates the display of expert behavior by seven outstanding video game-playing children ages 10 and 11. Analyzes observation and debriefing transcripts for evidence of self-monitoring, pattern recognition, principled decision making, qualitative thinking, and superior memory, and discusses implications for educators regarding the development…

Wilcox, Teresa – Cognition, 1999
Four experiments examined the perceptual features used by 4.5- to 11.5-month olds to individuate objects involved in occlusion events. Results indicated that 4.5-month olds used shape and size features to individuate objects in occlusion events. By 7.5 months, infants used pattern, and by 11.5 months, they used color to reason about object…

Burke, Lisa A.; Rau, Barbara – Educational Management Administration & Leadership, 2007
Managing chronic excuse-making behaviors of faculty can be difficult and challenging for college administrators. In this article, Schlenker's responsibility triangle is applied in the higher education forum to better understand the underpinnings of responsibility and accountability in faculty jobs. Using this framework, attention is given to…

Papic, Marina – Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, 2007
Patterning is an essential skill in early mathematics learning, particularly in the development of spatial awareness, sequencing and ordering, comparison, and classification. This includes the ability to identify and describe attributes of objects and similarities and differences between them. Patterning is also integral to the development of…

MacDonald, Elaine; Fitzsimons, Elaine; Walsh, Patricia Noonan – British Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2007
The study aimed to identify patterns of respite use and coping strategies among family caregivers in a region of Ireland. Firstly, we asked what child and family characteristics were associated with use of respite care. Secondly, we explored coping strategies reported by family carers. The study was undertaken with a view to informing respite…

Nathan, Mitchell J.; Kim, Sunae – Mathematical Thinking and Learning: An International Journal, 2007
Cross-sectional and longitudinal data from students as they advance through the middle school years (grades 6-8) reveal insights into the development of students' pattern generalization abilities. As expected, students show a preference for lower-level tasks such as "reading the data," over more distant predictions and generation of abstractions.…
