Peer reviewedLumsden, D. Barry – Educational Gerontology, 1978
The schools of education at 88 institutions that offer graduate-level training in adult education were surveyed for information pertinent to their course offerings in and about aging. Of these 88 schools, only 19 percent offer courses in education and aging. (Author)
Descriptors: Adult Education, College Curriculum, Educational Gerontology, Graduate Study
Peer reviewedBrown, Douglas T.; Lindstrom, John P. – Psychology in the Schools, 1978
A comprehensive study was undertaken to investigate the "state of the art" in the training of school psychologists. The data indicate that the rate of growth in the number of programs is increasing, especially at the sixth-year level. Data are presented on student and faculty demographics and characteristics. (Author)
Descriptors: Counselor Training, Educational Programs, Graduate Study, Higher Education
Peer reviewedKeyfitz, Nathan – Public Interest, 1978
Notes that the course of the enrollment curve, from a rapid increase to a plateau and then a decline, threatens graduate education and thereby scientific research with more far-reaching consequences than have been suspected. (Author/AM)
Descriptors: Conflict, Educational Problems, Enrollment Influences, Enrollment Trends
Peer reviewedWalsh, John – Science, 1978
Describes a survey of doctorates awarded in America. The number of Ph.D.'s averaged an increase of seven percent annually, until leveling off in the 1970's. The number of education doctorates led the way. Women outnumbered men six to one. The number of institutions awarding doctorates has also increased substantially. (GA)
Descriptors: Degrees (Academic), Doctoral Degrees, Graduate Study, Higher Education
Peer reviewedFallon, Daniel – Change, 1978
Although enrollments in undergraduate liberal arts curricula and in traditional graduate programs are slowing, enrollments in explicitly inter- or multidisciplinary graduate liberal education programs are increasing. Some of these programs are described. (LBH)

Peer reviewedKim, Y. S.; Noz, Marilyn E. – American Journal of Physics, 1978
A simple and concrete example for illustrating the properties of noncompact groups is presented. The example is based on the covariant harmonic-oscillator formalism in which the relativistic wave functions carry a covariant-probability interpretation. This can be used in a group theory course for graduate students who have some background in…

Peer reviewedKim, Y. S.; Noz, Marilyn E. – American Journal of Physics, 1978
A relativistic harmonic-oscillator formalism which is mathematically simple as the nonrelativistic harmonic oscillator is given. In view of its effectiveness in describing Lorentz-deformed hadrons, the inclusion of this formalism in a first-year graduate course will make the results of high-energy experiments more understandable. (BB)
Descriptors: College Science, Graduate Study, Higher Education, Instructional Materials
Peer reviewedChavda, L. K. – American Journal of Physics, 1978
A complete matrix formulation of the theory of small oscillations is presented. Simple analytic solutions involving matrix functions are found which clearly exhibit the transients, the damping factors, the Breit-Wigner form for resonances, etc. (BB)
Descriptors: College Science, Graduate Study, Higher Education, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedGriskey, Richard G. – Chemical Engineering Education, 1978
A method is described for ranking college chemical engineering departments in terms of a productivity index. Twenty-four departments are ranked. The results for 1976 and 1977 are compared. (BB)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Engineering Education, Evaluation, Evaluation Methods
Knight, Michael – New York Times, 1978
Despite increasing competition from Stanford University in California and a number of other graduate business schools, an M.B.A. degree from Harvard is still regarded as the great golden passport to life in the upper class. Discusses the salary and business advantages in having a Harvard M.B.A. and the attitudes of three graduates on what the…
Descriptors: Business Administration, Case Studies, Graduate Study, Graduate Surveys
Peer reviewedDamon, Parker – National Elementary Principal, 1978
Preservice and graduate programs in educational administration fail to fill the situation-specific needs of principals, according to the author. What is needed is a variety of inservice programs, tailored for (and by) principals, that address both specific concerns and broader philosophic issues. (Author/DS)
Descriptors: Administrator Education, Educational Needs, Elementary Secondary Education, Graduate Study
Peer reviewedCallen, Earl; Scadron, Michael – Science, 1978
The project aids able students from countries that have no physics Ph.D. programs (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand) to obtain assistantships and Ph.D.'s abroad, assists in the technological development of those countries, and helps U.S. schools in selecting the most promising foreign candidates. (BB)
Descriptors: Asian Studies, Developing Nations, Foreign Students, Graduate Study
Peer reviewedBlalock, H. M., Jr. – Society, 1978
In this article the author speculates about the future of research, methodology, and education in the social sciences. He calls for a greater consensus among social scientists in regard to terminology and research operations. (GC)

Peer reviewedHoselitz, Bert F. – Society, 1978
Interdepartmental and interdisciplinary trends in social science education and research are projected for the coming decades. The five social sciences are envisioned as maintaining separate curricula through sharing many of the same concerns. (GC)
Descriptors: Curriculum, Curriculum Development, Educational Trends, Graduate Study
Peer reviewedPfeffer, Jeffrey; And Others – Sociology of Education, 1976
Examines the relationship between prestige, prestige mobility, and publication in major scholarly journals in the disciplines of chemistry, sociology, and political science. The authors conclude that there are differences in this relationship across disciplines and that publication is more important in disciplines with a well developed scientific…
