Schinke-Llano, Linda – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1989
Reviews recent research, and discusses difficulties inherent in research, on the language development of bilingual children. Recommendations are made supporting a multidisciplinary approach to research on language development in bilingual children, and suggested avenues of inquiry within such a framework are outlined. (112 references) (Author/OD)
Descriptors: Bilingualism, Cognitive Development, Environmental Influences, Language Processing

Bates, Elizabeth; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1989
Examined relationships among word comprehension, word production, and enactive and gestural naming by 136 infants of 12-16 months. Results indicate that infants can use adult speech as an aid in the reproduction of modeled gestures. (RJC)
Descriptors: Body Language, Child Language, Comprehension, Infants

Schriefers, H. – Cognitive Psychology, 1990
Experiments involving 121 college students in the Netherlands were based on the hypothesis that the difficulty of retrieving a lexical item for language production has at least 2 different sources. Experiments supported the distinction between a preverbal conceptual and a lexical level of representation in language production. (SLD)
Descriptors: College Students, Concept Formation, Foreign Countries, Higher Education

Reed, Marjorie A. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1989
Examined the processing of speech and nonspeech sounds by 23 reading-disabled children. Children were required to identify and report the order of pairs of stimuli. Children had difficulty with very brief tones and stop consonant syllables at short interstimulus intervals. (SAK)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Children, Cues, Language Processing

Munsell, Paul E.; And Others – Language Learning, 1988
Discusses the most significant findings of recent research and scholarship on the nature of the brain and its relevance to the teaching and learning of human languages. Topics covered include: (1) whether the brain is highly integrated or componential; (2) differences between conscious and unconscious processes; (3) hemispheric specialization; (4)…
Descriptors: Brain Hemisphere Functions, Language Acquisition, Language Processing, Language Research

Hudson, Thom – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1993
Much research has posited a developmental sequence approach in second-language acquisition. This study reexamines the original social-psychological research upon which the multidimensional model is based and shows that it is incorrect because of faulty analysis. It also examines the limited applicability/generalizability of the developmental…
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Developmental Stages, Language Processing, Language Research

Hummer, Peter; And Others – Journal of Child Language, 1993
In a study of early functions of negation (rejection and denial), 48 children under age 3 were asked easy yes/no questions. The most likely age range for the appearance of error-free denial "no" at 1 year/8 months to 2 years/1 month supports the continuity theory of negation development. (Contains 27 references.) (Author/LB)
Descriptors: Child Language, Cognitive Development, Language Acquisition, Language Processing

Snowling, Margaret J. – Journal of Research in Reading, 1995
Reviews three sorts of converging evidence regarding dyslexic children's phonological processing difficulties: data from studies of spoken language impairments in dyslexic readers, evidence from the analysis of dyslexic reading and spelling skills, and evidence of phonological deficits that vary in severity and extent across the life-span in…
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Elementary Education, Language Processing, Language Research

Garnham, Alan; Altmann, Gerry – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1995
Examines research on the interpretation of ambiguous sentences and the presence or absence of contextual override effects. This study also examines the requirements placed on computational models of word-by-word incremental processing. The emerging picture is of a multiple constraint-based system in which knowledge ranging from lexical through…
Descriptors: Ambiguity, Computational Linguistics, Language Acquisition, Language Processing

Garnsey, Susan M. – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1993
Several aspects of the measurement and analysis of event-related brain potentials are explained in this introduction to a special issue, and some interpretation issues relevant for language studies are discussed. This article provides background for language researchers not familiar with the methodology. (Contains 42 references.) (Author/LB)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Foreign Countries, Language Acquisition, Language Processing

Sandra, Dominiek – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1994
This paper examines several ways in which the morphological structure of words might enter their lexical representation or processing. It addresses possibilities such as representational economy, efficiency of processing, and module-external motivations. (55 references) (MDM)
Descriptors: Language Processing, Language Research, Linguistic Theory, Morphemes

Van Hoek, Karen – Language, 1995
Presents an analysis of the constraints on pronominal anaphora in English within the framework of cognitive grammar in terms of semantic distinctions between pronouns and full noun phrases. Semantic notions of prominence and conceptual interconnection are used to develop a model of "conceptual reference points." The analysis provides problematic…
Descriptors: Language Processing, Models, Morphology (Languages), Nouns
Yokoi, Toshio – International Forum on Information and Documentation, 1995
Reports on the use of an electronic dictionary to research and develop a large-scale language database that will help computers process and understand natural languages, and will greatly contribute to future developments in information science. Also discusses the need for and uses of linguistic and world knowledge databases. (JMV)
Descriptors: Database Design, Dictionaries, Futures (of Society), Information Science
Young, Richard; Perkins, Kyle – IRAL, 1995
This paper attempts to integrate several different theories of the second-language learning process into a general theory of the human learners. Includes references. (JL)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Proficiency

Paul, Sarla – International Journal of Instructional Media, 1992
This study examined the effect on comprehension of the number of propositions in a piece of spoken discourse, words per minute (WPM) rate, and presentation of pictures with the discourse. Results indicated better comprehension at lower WPM and when pictures were presented. No significant interactions were found. (14 references) (MES)
