Spolsky, Bernard – TESOL Quarterly, 1988
Explores the requirements for a general theory of second language learning that accounts both for the fact that people can learn more than one language and for the generalizable individual differences that occur in such learning, and considers the formalization and testing of such a theoretical model. (Author/CB)
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Language Aptitude, Language Processing, Language Skills

Loritz, Donald – CALICO Journal, 1987
Gives a short grammar of the Lisp computer language. Presents an introductory English parser (Simparse) as an example of how to write a parser in Lisp. Lists references for further explanation. Intended as preparation for teachers who may use computer-assisted language instruction in the future. (LMO)
Descriptors: Authoring Aids (Programing), Computational Linguistics, Computer Assisted Instruction, Grammar

Garnham, A. – Language and Speech, 1987
Investigates the availability of surface representations for the interpretation of verb-phrase ellipsis. Results show that an elliptical verb phrase is most easily interpreted if its antecedent is in the immediately preceding sentence and that this can not be explained in terms of the unnaturalness of the passages with distant antecedents. (MM)
Descriptors: Encoding (Psychology), Grammar, Language Processing, Language Research

MacWhinney, Brian – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1987
Describes the "Competition Model" (Bates and MacWhinney, 1982) dealing with second-language sentence processing by bilinguals and research that has further developed theories dealing with the model. (CB)
Descriptors: Adult Learning, Bilingualism, Cognitive Mapping, Interlanguage

Kilborn, Kerry; Cooreman, Ann – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1987
Study of the probabilistic nature of processing strategies in Dutch/English bilinguals indicated that sentence interpretation in English generally paralleled that in Dutch, with divergence toward similarity in performance by English monolinguals. (Author/CB)
Descriptors: Cues, Dutch, English, Language Processing

McKenna, Michael C. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1986
The purpose of this study was to test a specific hypothesis with regard to how cloze retrieval takes place once semantic constraints are recognized. Results from human subjects and computer simulation suggested that increase in latency between the two- and three-semantic-constraint conditions was not artifactual. (JAZ)
Descriptors: Cloze Procedure, Computer Simulation, Correlation, Graduate Students

Piper, David – English Quarterly, 1986
Presents some personal experimental work relating to world metaphors together with that of others working in the areas of logic, psychology, and philosophy. (NKA)
Descriptors: English Instruction, English Literature, Fiction, Language Processing

Hoek, Dorothy; And Others – Journal of Child Language, 1986
Analysis of a one-year-old's lexical development suggested factors causing overextensions: using known words for more recently acquired or unknown words; expressing incomplete knowledge of defining features of two or more similar meaning words; producing overextensions of preferred words; using phonologically simpler more than difficult words; and…
Descriptors: Case Studies, Child Language, Communication Skills, Diaries

Annis, Linda Ferrill – Journal of Experimental Education, 1985
This study investigated the effectiveness of reading only, regular note taking, and paragraph summaries for questions at the six levels of Bloom's taxonomy. Paragraph summaries were most effective at the application and analysis levels and least effective at the synthesis and evaluation levels. (Author/LMO)
Descriptors: Association (Psychology), Cognitive Processes, Educational Psychology, Encoding (Psychology)

Belenky, Mary Field; And Others – Journal of Education, 1985
Delineates five different ways of knowing with which 135 women who participated in a survey make sense of their experience in the world: silence, procedural knowledge, received knowledge, subjective knowledge, and constructed knowledge. Describes patterns of discourse in subjects' families and their role in intellectual development.
Descriptors: Cognitive Structures, Cognitive Style, Communication (Thought Transfer), Epistemology

Pavesi, Maria – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1986
Describes a study in which English relative clauses were elicited from two groups of Italian learners: formal learners and informal learners. The results agreed with the order of acquisition predicted by the Accessibility Hierarchy (Keenan and Comrie, 1977, 1979). (Author/SED)
Descriptors: English (Second Language), Incidental Learning, Intentional Learning, Interlanguage

Van Patten, Bill – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1986
Discusses current literature dealing with the pedagogical implications of the ACTFL Provisional Proficiency Guidelines. The argument that grammatical accuracy needs to be stressed from the beginning of instruction is reviewed in the light of second language acquisition research, and it is suggested that such emphasis on grammatical correctness is…
Descriptors: Communicative Competence (Languages), Grammar, Language Processing, Language Proficiency

Maun, Ian – British Journal of Language Teaching, 1986
Provides a brief overview of S. Krashen's language acquisition theory. Examples of exercises on French-English cognates are provided, and the role of cognates and of exercises on them in relation to the monitor theory is discussed. (SED)
Descriptors: Communicative Competence (Languages), Comprehension, English, French

Nagle, Stephen J.; Sanders, Sara L. – TESOL Quarterly, 1986
Reviews the theoretical foundations of current-second language acquisition models. Draws upon this research as well as upon various studies of memory and verbal-input processing to present a theoretical model of adult second language comprehension. Discusses the implications of comprehension theory for second-language teaching. (Author/SED)
Descriptors: Adult Learning, Attention, Language Processing, Learning Theories

Walters, Joel; Wolf, Yuval – Language Learning, 1986
Presents some of the general goals in story grammar research and examines its major issues. Then describes a study in which the effects of text content and order on narrative recall were investigated in intermediate and advanced readers of English as a foreign language. (SED)
Descriptors: English (Second Language), Language Processing, Language Proficiency, Language Research
