Kuhn, Deanna – Science Education, 2007
Thirty fourth-grade students participated in an extended intervention previously successful in fostering skills of scientific investigation and inference, notably control of variables (COV). The intervention was similarly successful for a majority of students in the present study, enabling them to isolate the three causal and two noncausal…

Banerjee, Robin; Yuill, Nicola; Larson, Christina; Easton, Kate; Robinson, Elizabeth; Rowley, Martin – Developmental Psychology, 2007
Two experiments investigated children's implicit and explicit differentiation between beliefs about matters of fact and matters of opinion. In Experiment 1, 8- to 9-year-olds' (n = 88) explicit understanding of the subjectivity of opinions was found to be limited, but their conformity to others' judgments on a matter of opinion was considerably…

Saba, Shahrokh; Ciaccio, James A.; Espinal, Jennifer; Aman, Courtney E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The stereochemical investigation is conducted to give students the combined experience of chemical synthesis of amines and N-heterocycles and structural stereochemical analysis using NMR spectroscopy. Students are introduced to the concept of topicity-stereochemical relationships between ligands within a molecule by synthesizing N,O-acetals.

Cote, Mark; Day, Richard; de Peuter, Greig – Review of Education, Pedagogy & Cultural Studies, 2007
How might critical academics work within, against, and beyond the neoliberal order? How might the progressive intellectual act be understood today? How can and does the university do more than serve corporate powers and produce docile producer-consumer- citizens? How are people working to develop critical pedagogies appropriate to their local…

Stone, Anna; Valentine, Tim – Cognition, 2007
Knowledge of familiar people is essential to guide social interaction, yet there is uncertainty about whether semantic knowledge for people is stored in a categorical structure as for objects. Four priming experiments using hard-to-perceive primes investigated whether occupation forms a category connecting famous persons in semantic memory. Primes…

Marini, Isabella; Ipata, Piero Luigi – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, 2007
Many high school biology courses address mainly the molecular and cellular basis of life. The complexity that underlies the most essential processes is often difficult for the students to understand; possibly, in part, because of the inability to see and explore them. Six simple practical experiments on purine catabolism as a part of a…

Crouch, R. David; Richardson, Amie; Howard, Jessica L.; Harker, Rebecca L.; Barker, Kathryn H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The reaction of a ketone and an aldehyde in aqueous Na[subscript 2]CO[subscript 2] is described. This experiment is performed in the absence of strong bases or organic solvents and offers the opportunity for students to observe the critical role that reaction temperature and base strength have in determining the product of the base-mediated…

Niewahner, J. H.; Walters, Keith A.; Wagner, Ashley – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The three-step synthesis of Geodken's macrocycle, H[subscript 2]C[subscript 22]H[subscript 22]N[subscript 4], (5,14-dihydro-6,8,15,17-tetramethyldibenzo[b,i]-[1,4,8,11] tetraazacyclotetradecahexane), in an overall yield of 65% is described. By utilizing the synthesis of the macrocycle's dichloride salt, H[subscript 2]C[subscript 22]H[subscript…

Nurminen, Erkki; Poijarvi, Paivi; Koskua, Katja; Hovinen, Jari – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
Treatment of d-fructose with methanol in the presence of acid as a catalyst gives a mixture of methyl-[beta]-d-fructopyranoside, methyl-[alpha]-D-fructofuranoside, and methyl-[beta]-d-fructofuranoside, which were separated on an ion exchange column and characterized polarimetrically.

Purvis-Roberts, Kathleen L.; Moeur, Harriet P.; Zanella, Andrew – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
In this laboratory experiment, students take environmental samples at various locations around the college campuses, take geospatial coordinates with a global position systems (GPS) unit, and map their results on a geo-referenced campus map with geographical information systems (GIS) software. Nitrogen dioxide air pollution sampling is used as an…

Mak, Kendrew K. W.; Chan, Wing-Fat; Lung, Ka-Ying; Lam, Wai-Yee; Ng, Weng-Cheong; Lee, Siu-Fung – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
Competition experiments are a useful tool for preliminary study of the linear free energy relationship of organic reactions. This article describes a physical organic experiment for upper-level undergraduates to identify the rate-determining step of the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of benzaldehyde and acetophenone by studying the linear free…

Martin, Eric; Kellen-Yuen, Cynthia – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
A greener, microwave-assisted Wittig reaction has been developed for the second-semester organic teaching laboratory. Utilizing this microwave technique, a variety of styrene derivatives have been successfully synthesized from aromatic aldehydes in good yields (41-68%). The reaction not only occurs under neat reaction conditions, but also employs…

Blankespoor, Ronald L.; Hogendoorn, Stephanie; Pearson, Andrea – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The reactivity and orientation effects of a substituent are analyzed by using HPLC to determine the competitive nitration of the benzene-toluene and benzene-fluorobenzene mixtures. The results have shown that HPLC is an excellent instrumental method to use in analyzing these mixtures.

Sereda, Grigoriy A.; Rajpara, Vikul B. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
An acutely less toxic 2-bromobutane is used to develop a simple graphite-promoted procedure of alkylation of p-xylene. It is further demonstrated that aluminum chloride is not required, the need for aqueous workup is eliminated, waste solutions are not produced and the multiple use of the catalyst is allowed.

Eichler, Jack F.; Patrick, Heather; Harmon, Brenda; Coonce, Janet – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
Several active-learning techniques and inquiry-driven laboratory exercises were incorporated in labs to determine the effects of these methodologies on the fundamental skills of the students. The practice has been found extremely useful for developing the learning abilities of the students.
