Peer reviewedMershon, Donald H.; Lembo, Vincent L. – American Journal of Psychology, 1977
Attempts to replicate Gogel's (1972) observations with points of light and examines in addition whether the same results would be obtained if the binocularly nearer object was made visually more massive than the farther object and if the residual oculomotor cues were varied to produce different values of the reference distance. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Charts, Cues, Distance, Experiments
Peer reviewedHeilbrun, Alfred B., Jr. – Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 1977
Tests three proposed attentional mechanisms as possible behavioral strategies by which schizophrenics could prevent relevant information from registering and considers whether stimulation coming through the visual or the auditory channels is differentially susceptible to motivated attempts to disattend to relevant information. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Attention, Experiments, Hypothesis Testing, Information Processing
Jahnke, John C.; Nowaczyk, Ronald H. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
Seven-digit strings were presented for immediate recall. Before recall, subjects either read or retrieved from memory a single item (response prefix). Results were seen in terms of the sharing of the limited capacity of an active memory system by the memory series, the response prefix, and the operations to retrieve and emit the items. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Information Processing, Memory
Peer reviewedFoster, N.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Describes an experiment in which students use ion exchange chromatography to separate a mixture of chloro complexes of transition metal ions and then use spectrophotometry to define qualitatively the efficiency of the ion exchange columns. Background information, materials needed, and procedures used are included. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Chromatography, College Science, Higher Education
Busch, Phyllis S. – Outdoor Communicator, 1985
Provides directions for basic science experiments which demonstrate the rain cycle, fundamentals of cloud formation, and testing for the presence of acidity in local rainwater. Describes materials required, step-by-step instructions, and discussion topics. (NEC)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Environmental Education, Experiential Learning, Learning Activities
Peer reviewedBlumberg, Avrom A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Provides background information on polymeric films and membranes including production methods, special industrial and medical applications, laboratory preparation, and an experimental investigation of a porous cellulose acetate membrane. Presents a demonstration to distinguish between high- and low-density polyethylene. (JM)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Demonstrations (Educational), Higher Education
Peer reviewedEiceman, G. A.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Natural gas from regular commercial lines contains enough carbon-8 and above hydrocarbon contaminants to serve as a satisfactory sample for breakthrough experiments. Procedures used, typical results obtained, and theoretical background information are provided. (JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures, Organic Chemistry
Peer reviewedMacCarthy, Patrick – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Background information, procedures used, and typical results obtained are provided for an experiment (based on the potassium bromide pressed-pellet method) involving the infrared spectroscopy of deuterated compounds. Deuteration refers to deuterium-hydrogen exchange at active hydrogen sites in the molecule. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures
Peer reviewedPorter, Lee A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Background information is provided on the natural products found in marine organisms in general and the brown algae in particular. Also provided are the procedures needed to isolate D-mannitol (a primary metabolite) and cholesterol from brown algae. (JN)
Descriptors: Botany, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education
Peer reviewedJezorek, John R.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Describes the design and evaluation of a Spectronic 20-based detector as well as a simple system for postcolumn derivatization useful for metal-ion chromatographic detection. Both detection and derivatization can be performed in the ultra-violet (UV) mode using a low-cost UV-visible spectrophotometer and UV-region derivatization reagents. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, Chromatography, College Science
Peer reviewedTjahjadi, Mahari; Gupta, Santosh K. – Chemical Engineering Education, 1986
Describes an experimental program to examine flow curve determination for non-Newtonian fluids. Includes apparatus used (a modification of Walawender and Chen's set-up, but using a 50cc buret connected to a glass capillary through a Tygon tube), theoretical information, procedures, and typical results obtained. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Engineering, Engineering Education, Fluid Mechanics, Higher Education
Peer reviewedCarter, Gillian E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Highlights difficulties that occur when teachers attempt to devise new experiments (use of hydrogen peroxide decomposition) and how seemingly useless results can be turned into productive student projects. Considers effects of ions present in tap water, pH, dust, and nature of vessel's surface. Reaction order and safety precautions are noted. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, High Schools, Science Education
Peer reviewedWhyman, Derek – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Background information/theory, procedures used, and typical results obtained are discussed for a system in which kerosene, water, and 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) are used to demonstrate the principles of liquid-liquid extraction in a Graesser rotary contractor. The DNP is almost equal between the two disimilar solvents. (JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures, Organic Chemistry
Peer reviewedDietz, Mark L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
An experimental simple ion-exchange experiment in which the amount of calcium present in dietary supplement tablets has been developed is described and some typical student results for several brands of tablets are presented. (JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Dietetics, Higher Education
Peer reviewedGilbert, George L., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Describes a simple apparatus used to demonstrate the thermal conductivity of gases. Procedures for completing the demonstration are included. (JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Demonstrations (Educational), Higher Education, Science Education
