Liang, Kun-Hsia; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1995
A computer-assisted, K-fold cross-validation technique is discussed in the framework of canonical correlation analysis of randomly generated data sets. Analysis results suggest that this technique can effectively reduce the contamination of canonical variates and canonical correlations by sample-specific variance components. (Author/SLD)

Shirts, R. Garry – Training, 1992
Tips include (1) don't confuse replication with simulation; (2) choose the right subject; (3) develop a design plan; (4) make trainees responsible for actions; (5) use symbols for emotionally charged ideas; (6) don't play games; (7) use nontrainees for realism; (8) assess performance appropriately; (9) alpha test in low-risk situations; and (10)…

Describes a simulation that can be used in the classroom to help clarify difficult concepts in protein synthesis. (ZWH)

Harrison, J. Richard; Carroll, Glenn R. – Administrative Science Quarterly, 1991
Develops a cultural transmission model with the following variables: worker entry and exit rate, organization growth rate, recruiting selectivity, socialization intensity, and the rate that socialization decays if not reinforced. A computer simulation of the model found that cultural systems in organizations are highly robust and reach equilibrium…

Gredler, Margaret Bell – Simulation/Games for Learning, 1990
Discussion of the design of games and simulations focuses on the fundamental defining features called deep structure. The two main levels of interaction in games and simulations are described; generalized reinforcers are discussed; types of defective contingencies are explained, including escape or avoidance behaviors; and the concept of negative…

Burket, George R.; Yen, Wendy M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1997
Using simulated data modeled after real tests, a Thurstone method (L. Thurstone, 1925 and later) and three-parameter item response theory were compared for vertical scaling. Neither procedure produced artificial scale shrinkage, and both produced modest scale expansion for one simulated condition. (SLD)

Leenen, Iwin; Van Mechelen, Iven; De Boeck, Paul; Rosenberg, Seymour – Psychometrika, 1999
Presents a three-way, three-mode extension of the two-way, two-mode hierarchical classes model of P. De Boeck and S. Rosenberg (1998) for the analysis of individual differences in binary object x attribute arrays. Illustrates the model with data on psychiatric diagnosis and discusses the relation between the model and other extant models. (SLD)

French, Guy A.; Dodd, Barbara G. – Journal of Outcome Measurement, 1999
Studied item and trait parameter recovery for Andrich's rating-scale model (D. Andrich, 1978) using the PARSCALE computer program. Simulation results suggest that Andrich's rating scale allows the use of considerably smaller calibration samples than are typically recommended for other polytomous item-response-theory models. (SLD)

Pedersen, Paul – Simulation & Gaming, 2000
Suggests that insight as a participant-observer is more valuable than merely hearing about other people's experiences. Discusses experiential learning, the use of simulations and structured exercises as safe places to take risks, and learning cultural patterns of assumption. (LRW)

Endres-Niggemeyer, Brigitte – Information Processing & Management, 2000
Describes SimSum (Simulation of Summarizing), which simulates 20 real-world working steps of expert summarizers. Presents an empirically founded cognitive model of summarizing and demonstrates that human summarization strategies can be simulated. Discusses current research in automatic summarization, summarizing in the World Wide Web, and…

Ponocny, Ivo – Psychometrika, 2000
Introduces a new algorithm for obtaining exact person fit indexes for the Rasch model. The algorithm realizes most tests for a general family of alternative hypotheses, including tests concerning differential item functioning. The method is also used as a goodness-of-fit test in some circumstances. Simulated examples and an empirical investigation…

Jarrell, Michele Glanker – Research in the Schools, 1994
Computer simulations used to compare the Mahalanobis distance procedure with the Andrews-Pregibon statistic for identifying multivariate outliers result in the conclusion that the choice of procedure is not critical, since both identified valid data points as outliers. Results with false outliers as the dependent variable suggest the importance of…

Page, Michael P. A.; Norris, Dennis – Psychological Review, 1998
The primacy model is presented as a new model of serial recall. This model stores order information by means of the assumption that the strength of activation of successive list items decreases across list position to form a primary gradient. The model produces accurate simulation of the effects of word length, list length, and phonological…

Saunders, Danny; Gaston, Karen – British Journal of Educational Technology, 1996
Discusses a rank-ordering exercise designed to highlight evaluation issues involved in development of simulation training activities. The rank-ordering exercise raised awareness of internal and external validity issues, and highlighted the need for evaluation "checks" to be made during the planning stages of any research of consultancy…

Bandalos, Deborah L.; Enders, Craig K. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1996
Computer simulation indicated that reliability increased with the degree of similarity between underlying and observed distributions when the observed categorical distribution was deliberately constructed to match the shape of the underlying distribution of the trait being measured. Reliability also increased with correlation among variables and…
