Andrich, David; Luo, Guanzhong – Journal of Applied Measurement, 2003
Developed a method for conditional pairwise estimation in the Rasch model for ordered response categories using principal components analysis and evaluated the procedure through a simulation study. Results show that the quality of the estimates is excellent. (SLD)

Feinstein, Andrew Hale; Cannon, Hugh M. – Simulation & Gaming, 2002
Discussion of instructional research on simulation focuses on problems with validation research methodology. Discusses simulation fidelity and verification and reviews various concepts employed in the literature of simulation evaluation and integrates them into a coherent framework from which the evaluative process may proceed in a more systematic…

Rossi, Natasha; Wang, Xiaohui; Ramsay, James O. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2002
Combined several developments in statistics and item response theory to develop a procedure for analysis of dichotomously scored test data. This version of nonparametric item response analysis, as illustrated through simulation and with data from other studies, marginalizes the role of the ability parameter theta. (SLD)

Wollack, James A.; Bolt, Daniel M.; Cohen, Allan S.; Lee, Young-Sun – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2002
Compared the quality of item parameter estimates for marginal maximum likelihood (MML) and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) with the nominal response model using simulation. The quality of item parameter recovery was nearly identical for MML and MCMC, and both methods tended to produce good estimates. (SLD)

Ziv, Amitai; Wolpe, Paul Root; Small, Stephen D.; Glick, Shimon – Academic Medicine, 2003
Describes simulation-based learning in medical education and presents four these that make a framework for simulations: (1) best standards of care and training; (2) error management and patient safety; (3) patient autonomy; and (4) social justice and resource allocation. (SLD)

De Ayala, Ralph J.; Kim, Seock-Ho; Stapleton, Laura M.; Dayton, C. Mitchell – International Journal of Testing, 2002
Conducted a Monte Carlo study to compare various approaches to detecting differential item functioning (DIF) under a conceptualization of DIF that recognizes that observed data are a mixture of data from multiple latent populations or classes. Demonstrated the usefulness of the approach. (SLD)

DeMars, Christine E. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2003
Generated data to simulate multidimensionality resulting from including two or four subtopics on a test. DIMTEST analysis results suggest that including multiple topics, when they are commonly taught together, can lead to conceptual multidimensionality and mathematical multidimensionality. (SLD)

De Ayala, R. J. – Journal of Applied Measurement, 2003
Studied four different approaches for handling missing data for their capacity to mitigate against the effect of omitted responses on person location estimation. Results from a Monte Carlo study show that the hot-decking procedure performed best of the methods examined. (SLD)

Rotou, Ourania; Headrick, Todd C.; Elmore, Patricia B. – International Journal of Testing, 2002
Developed a hybrid procedure for number correct scoring that uses test item weights based on multidimensional item response theory and total test scores based on classical true score theory. Simulation results show that all scoring methods in the study generated estimated and true scores that were highly correlated, but the hybrid method resulted…

Reinartz, Werner J.; Echambadi, Raj; Cin, Wynne W. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 2002
Tested empirically the applicability of a method developed by S. Mattson for generating data on latent variables with controlled skewness and kurtosis of the observed variables. Monte Carlo simulation results suggest that Mattson's method appears to be a good approach to generate data with defined levels of skewness and kurtosis. (SLD)

Chan, Fong; And Others – Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, 1990
Reviews efforts to develop computer-based, case-management simulations for use in training rehabilitation counselors. Describes exemplary systems. Discusses issues related to research and development of computer software in case-management training. (Author)

Cave, Kyle R.; Wolfe, Jeremy M. – Cognitive Psychology, 1990
The Feature Integration Theory of visual search proposed by A. M. Treisman and others (1980, 1986) is reviewed, and a modified Guided Search theory is presented in which the parallel stage guides the serial stage as it chooses display elements to process. A computer simulation illustrates the theory. (SLD)

Oshima, Takako C.; Miller, M. David – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1990
A bidimensional 2-parameter logistic model was applied to data generated for 2 groups on a 40-item test. Item parameters were the same across groups; correlation across the 2 traits varied. Results indicate the need for caution in using item-response theory (IRT)-based invariance indexes with multidimensional data for these groups. (TJH)
