Rider, Michael E. – Balance Sheet, 1983
The use of job and/or flow-of-work word processing simulations duplicates the typical dynamic business setting that business education students are preparing to enter. (SK)

Life, Richard; Bennett, Paul W. – History and Social Science Teacher, 1982
Grade nine level students in Canadian studies are introduced to and immersed in the major "crises" affecting Quebec and Canada during the Quiet Revolution and to the present day in this simulation exercise. Students are asked to come to grips with the central problems of Quebec in crisis. (RM)
Descriptors: Area Studies, Class Activities, Educational Games, Secondary Education
Gehris, Dennis O. – Journal of Business Education, 1982
Discusses the nature of simulations in business education (how it differs from games and practice sets, purposes and disadvantages, and types of simulation) and the effectiveness of simulation in business education (evaluation, formal research). (CT)
Descriptors: Business Education, Office Practice, Program Effectiveness, Program Evaluation
Hope, Mary H. – Simulation/Games for Learning, 1980
Describes the use of a simulation designed mainly for trainers and educators who want to get others to consider the factors that affect change. The simulation itself is a loosely structured game which introduces participants to the question of what causes change. (Author/LLS)

Alexander, Bill; Doherty, Ken – History and Social Science Teacher, 1980
Provides instructions for a simulation which illustrates the concept of cultural assimilation. The game draws a parallel with problems faced by cultural minorities in Canada. Two groups, each with different culture, values, and priorities must reach a decision over the construction of a pipeline. (Author/KC)

Yovits, M. C.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1981
The third of a series, this article describes prototype experiments which place human decision makers in an interactive decision-making situation, presents results typical of those thus far observed in the prototype experiments, and describes preliminary analysis of the data. Three references are listed. (FM)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Decision Making, Experiments, Information Theory
Gerritsma, Jaap G. M.; Smal, Ko A. – Journal of Experiential Learning and Simulation, 1980
Identifies aspects of simulation design for adult education encountered when using clinical simulations for training students and practicing physicians in medical decision making. Design considerations for adult learners are discussed and compared using the "forward and backward" design approach (AO)

Takamatsu, Shinobu; And Others – Information Processing and Management, 1980
Presents a method for normalizing English document titles so they can be used in the online retrieval of documents: the title expressed by a noun phrase or clause is converted by parsing to a function-expression, which is transformed to a predicate-governor form and then normalized to a standard form. (Author/JD)
Descriptors: Computers, Function Words, Information Retrieval, Online Systems
Coombs, Don H. – Simulation/Games for Learning, 1980
Reviews five journals on simulation and gaming that are published in North America and the United Kingdom and suggests that there is a problem of subject redundancy in articles among and within the journals. (CMV)

Hakstian, A. Ralph; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1980
The procedures yielding confidence intervals for maximized alpha coefficients of Joe and Woodward are reviewed. Confidence interval procedures of Whalen and Masson are next reviewed. Results are then presented of a Monte Carlo investigation of the procedures. (Author/CTM)
Descriptors: Reliability, Research Reviews (Publications), Simulation, Statistical Analysis
Smith, Becky; Nevins, Cynthia – G/C/T, 1979
The two-part activity fosters a group sense of the shared concerns of parents of gifted children. Descriptions of 10 gifted children are provided for use in the activity. (PHR)

French, Ron – Physical Educator, 1979
Suggestions for possible homework assignments involving physical education activities and a list of simulated games manufacturers are provided. (LH)
Descriptors: Games, Homework, Learning Activities, Physical Education
Stolovitch, Harold D. – NSPI Journal, 1979
The innovative technology of simulations and games offers an attractive alternative for satellite transmission programing. They can help provide programs that involve the participants and make maximum use of the unique characteristics of long-distance transmission. (Author/JEG)

Chen, Wen-Hung; Thissen, David – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1997
Four statistics are proposed for the detection of local dependence (LD) among items analyzed using item response theory. Simulation results show that, under the locally dependent condition, the X-squared and G-squared indexes appear to be sensitive in detecting LD or multidimensionality among items. (SLD)
